COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 15th-ranked Ohio State (20-11 overall) men’s volleyball team has advanced to the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Tournament Semifinals with a 3-1 (27-30, 30-22, 30-28, 30-22) quarterfinal victory over fifth-seed Quincy (12-19) Saturday night in St. John Arena. The fourth-seeded and defending Tournament Champion Buckeyes will face host and top seed Loyola (22-6) Thursday at 7:30 p.m. CT in Alumni Gym. Second seed IPFW (21-6) faces third seed Ball State (21-5) in the first semifinal at 5 p.m. CT. OSU’s Andy Cole (Sr., Glendale, Wis.) scored 21.5 points with Sam Stevens (Sr./Jr., Miami, Fla.) contributing 15 off the bench in the victory. Cole had a team-high 20 kills, adding three assist blocks while Stevens recorded 14 kills and two assist blocks. Quincy’s Jon Moreno had a match-high 22.5 points with 20 kills, a solo block and three assists. Zach Splitt added 13 points with 11 kills, an ace serve and two assist blocks.

Ohio State held the early lead in game one and held a 20-16 lead before three Buckeye errors and a Niels Pedersen kill tied the game at 20. At 22-all, kills by Moreno and Pedersen and a Moreno-Branden Been block gave Quincy a 25-22 lead. At 29-27, Quincy, an Ohio State service error ended the game at 30-27 for the Hawks. Quincy hit .405 in the game to .235 for Ohio State.

In game two, Quincy had a 10-7 lead before a Cole kill, a Hawk error and a Sam Stevens (Sr./Jr., Miami, Fla.)-Layne Dreven (Sr./Jr., Pittsburgh, Pa.) block tied the game at 10. With the game tied at 14, a Stuart Katz (5th/Sr., Port Washington, N.Y.) kill, a John Albertson (So./Fr., Manchester, Mo.)-Katz block and two Hawk errors gave Ohio State an 18-14 lead. OSU expanded the lead, winning the game, 30-22, on a Hawk error. Ohio State hit .400 to .162 for Quincy.

Tied at 13 in game three, a five-point Buckeye run opened an 18-13 lead. The run began with two Hawk errors and an Albertson kill. Another Hawk error and an ace serve by Dreven completed the run. At 20-15, OSU, two Moreno kills and a Buckeye error cut the lead to 20-19. At 21-20, a Moreno kill tied the game at 21. A kill from Cole and a Hawk error made it 23-21. At 24-22, a Joe Caruso kill and a Pedersen ace serve tied the game at 24. OSU took a 25-24 lead with a Cole kill. A Splitt kill tied the game at 25. Quincy took a 26-25 lead with a Caruso kill. Katz, with a kill, tied the game at 26. A Moreno kill gave the Hawks a 27-26 lead. Katz responded with a kill to tie the game at 27. OSU took a 28-27 lead with a kill from Stevens. Quincy tied the game at 28 with a Been kill. An Albertson kill set game point for Ohio State at 29-28. The Buckeyes won the game, 30-28, with a Stevens-Dreven block to take a 2-1 lead in the match. Ohio State hit .484 for the game to .290 for Quincy.

Two kills from Stevens and one from Cole opened a 3-0 OSU lead in game four. The Buckeyes continued to build on the lead and won the game, 30-22 on a Dreven kill. OSU hit .415 for the game to .222 for Quincy.

For the match, Ohio State hit .382 to .273 for Quincy. The Buckeyes had a 68-59 advantage in kills while Quincy had a four to two edge in ace serves. OSU gave up 17 service errors to 16 for Quincy. Defensively, the Buckeyes had a 44-36 margin in digs with OSU’s Katz recording a match-high 13 with Conor Martin (So., Avon Lake, Ohio) adding 12. Mike Contee for Quincy had a team-high 11. At the net, OSU enjoyed a 10.5 to 6.5 advantage in team blocks. OSU’s Dreven and Albertson shared match-high honors with five total blocks each. Dreven had five assist blocks while Albertson collected a solo block and four assists. For Quincy, Moreno had a team-high four blocks with a solo and three assists. OSU setter Daniel Mathews (So., Shorewood, Wis.) had 57 assists in the match while Pedersen had 29 assists and Eric Wooldridge added 27 for Quincy..
