COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 15 Ohio State men’s tennis team defeated No. 24 Clemson, 6-1, Saturday at Jesse Owens West Recreation Center in Columbus, Ohio. The OSU tandem of Scott Green and Ross Wilson, ranked No. 38 in the nation, defeated the No. 17 pair Clemson’s Jarmaine Jenkins and Nathan Thompson, 8-1, at the No. 1 position. Freshmen Joey Atas, Chris Klingemann and Devin Mullings each claimed three-set victories at the Nos. 2, 3 and 4 singles spots to secure the win for Ohio State. The Buckeyes improve to 5-1 this season, while the Tigers drop to 6-2.

Ohio State took an early lead after clinching the doubles point on the No. 3 court when Joey Atas (Fr., Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) and Dennis Mertens (So., Braaschaat, Belgium/Koninkiljk) defeated John Boetsch and Brett Twente, 8-3. Senior co-captains Jeremy Wurtzman (Sr., Rochester, N.Y./Brickhouse Academy/Florida) and Brenton Contini (Sr., Dover, Ohio/Dover) dropped a tight 9-7 match to Clemson’s Damiisa Robinson and Goran Sterijovski at the No. 2 position.

In singles action, Atas remained undefeated in singles dual action with six wins. He posted a 6-2, 6-7, 6-2 win over No. 31 Thompson. Devin Mullings (Fr., Freeport, Bahamas/Ft. Lauderdale Prepatory) came back from a 6-7 first set and tallied a 6-4, 6-2 match win. Chris Klingemann (Fr., Brandenton, Fla.) secured the Ohio State win at No. 3 after he came back from a first set loss, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2. All attention switched to the No. 1 singles spot as Wurtzman, the No. 1 singles player in the country, defeated Sterijovski in a three-hour, three-set match. Wurtzman fell 7-6 in the first set while keeping the two sets notched game by game. Wurtzman recorded 6-4, 6-4 victories in the final two sets.

Next up, Ohio State plays host to Southeastern Conference foes No. 4 Vanderbilt Friday, Feb. 13 and No. 18 Alabama Saturday, Feb. 14 at Jesse Owens West Recreation Center. Both matches are scheduled for 3 p.m.
