COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 14 Ohio State men’s volleyball team traveled to No. 15 IPFW and dropped a 3-2 (22-25, 25-22, 27-29, 25-23, 15-10) MIVA heartbreaker to the Mastodons in Fort Wayne, Ind. Juniors Michael Henchy and Andrew Lutz along with redshirt freshman Driss Guessous totaled double-digit kills in the loss.
Henchy led the Buckeyes (7-8, 4-4) with his first double-double of the season, totaling 17 kills and a season-best 14 digs. Lutz also had 17 kills in the match and tied a career-best with five block assists. Guessous finished with a team-best .520 attack percentage, having 15 kills on 25 attempts with only two errors. The middle blocker added four blocks (1s, 3a) for the squad.
Eddie Rivera led the Mastodons (11-3, 4-2) with 19 kills and had six block assists. Andrew Sellan totaled 18 kills and five block assists, while Ramon Burgos had a match-high eight blocks. Setter Omar Rivera had a match-best 55 assists and libero Luis Bertran finished with 13 digs.
The Buckeyes took an early 2-0 lead to open the match, but the Mastodons moved ahead with an 8-7 advantage. Back-to-back kills by Lutz followed by a Guessous solo block led to a 14-11 Ohio State lead. IPFW, once again, came back and grabbed a late 21-20 lead before the Buckeyes locked the set at 22 and finished out the match on a three-point rally to win 25-22.
Kills from Henchy and Johnson pushed Ohio State ahead at 9-6 to start set two and kills from Guessous and Lutz followed by a Johnson ace set the score 14-10 in favor of the Buckeyes. IPFW used a 5-1 run to move ahead at 17-15 and a Mastodon block forced an OSU timeout at 20-17 IPFW. A Guessous kill cut the Mastodon lead to one at 22-21, but the home squad held for a 25-22 victory.
A handful IPFW runs led to a 9-6 advantage in set three, forcing an early Buckeye timeout. The Mastodons held on to their lead throughout the set and, leading 19-16, drove Ohio State to take its final timeout. The Buckeyes regrouped and used a run to come within a point at 20-19. IPFW earned set point at 24-22, but a kill from Henchy followed by a Lutz/Neary Block locked the score at 24 apiece. A kill by Lutz and an IPFW error gave the Buckeyes set point at 27-26 and a kill by Guessous followed by a Johnson ace sealed a 29-27 OSU win.
Ohio State used its momentum at the start of set four to take a 4-2 advantage, but IPFW responded to jump ahead 5-4. A Neary kill triggered a three-point Buckeye run for a 12-10 lead before the Mastodons returned with a run to tie the set at 17. IPFW used a 5-1 run to take a 22-19 lead and earned set point at 24-21. The Buckeyes stalled with a rally, but the Mastodons forced a fifth set winning by a score of 25-23.
The final set kicked off with a 4-1 IPFW lead and the home squad moved ahead to take a 9-4 advantage. The Mastodons captured the match with a 15-10 victory.
Ohio State returns to competition Friday, hosting non-conference rival Penn State in St. John Arena. The No. 14 Buckeyes and the No. 12 Nittany Lions face off at 7 p.m. ET and admission is free. The match will be televised by BTN on a delay and aired Saturday at 1 p.m. ET.
