COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 14th-ranked Ohio State (17-11 overall, 5-5 Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association) men’s volleyball team used the play of the senior class to defeat Quincy (12-15, 3-8), 3-0 (30-19, 30-27, 30-27), Saturday night in St. John Arena. Andy Cole (Sr., Glendale, Wis.) topped the senior trio with a match-high 17.5 points with Stuart Katz (5th/Sr., Port Washington, N.Y.) adding 17 and Mark Greaves (Sr., Fenton, Mo.) 11. Cole had 14 kills (.520) in the match, adding an ace serve, a solo block and three block assists. Katz contributed 12 kills (.450), three ace serves and four assist blocks while Greaves had 11 kills in the match. Jon Moreno posted a team-high 14.5 points for Quincy with Patrick Reidy adding 10.5. Moreno had 14 kills and an assist block with Reidy adding seven kills, two ace serves and three assist blocks.

Tied at six in game one, Ohio State took the lead with a Cole kill and a Hawk error. A Ryan Ehnert kill cut the lead to 8-7. Another Hawk error and a kill from Cole made it 10-7, OSU. At 12-9, a Moreno kill cut the lead to two at 12-10. A Reidy ace serve made it 12-11. A Hawk error and a Daniel Mathews (So., Shorewood, Wis.) kill made it 14-11. A Niels Pedersen kill made it 14-12. Kills by Katz and Reidy and an OSU error made the lead one at 15-14. Ohio State would score the next seven points starting with a Layne Dreven (Sr./Jr., Pittsburgh, Pa.) kill. A Katz ace serve and a Hawk error made it 18-14. Kills by Cole and Greaves, a second ace serve by Katz and a Hawk error took the lead to 22-14. Ohio State held the lead, winning the game, 30-19, off a Quincy error. The Buckeyes hit .441 for the game to .219 for the Hawks.

Ohio State opened game two with a Katz ace serve and a Cole kill for a 2-0 lead. Pedersen, with a kill, made it 2-1. Buckeye kills from Dreven and Greaves made the lead three at 4-1. Quincy kept the game close and trail by one at 17-16. Back-to-back kills from Katz gave OSU a 19-16 lead. At 24-21, a Branden Been kill cut the lead to two. A Buckeye triple block by Katz, Mathews and John Albertson (So./Fr., Manchester, Mo.) and a Hawk error made it 26-22, OSU. A Hawk error set game point at 29-25. Kills from Pedersen and Ryan Ehnert stopped two game points cutting the lead to 29-27. The Buckeyes closed out the game with a kill from Greaves at 30-27. Ohio State hit .351 to .308 for Quincy.

With game three tied at seven, kills by Greaves and Albertson and an ace serve from Cole opened a 10-7 Buckeye lead. Ohio State held a 12-10 lead when a Dreven kill, an ace serve by Mathews and a Katz kill gave OSU a five-point lead at 15-10. At 24-20, OSU, two Buckeye errors cut the lead to two at 24-22. A Cole kill and a Hawk error took the lead back to four at 26-22. An OSU error made it 26-23. The Buckeyes’ made it 27-23 with a kill from Greaves. Ehnert cut the lead to three at 27-24 with a kill. Albertson responded with a kill to make it 28-24. Three consecutive kills by Moreno cut the lead to one at 28-27. A Cole kill set match point at 29-27. Ohio State closed out the game with an Albertson kill to win the game, 30-27, and the match, 3-0. The Buckeyes hit .371 in the game to .231 for Quincy.

Ohio State hit .387 for the match while Quincy hit .255. The Buckeyes had a 53-47 edge in kills and a six to three advantage in ace serves. Ohio State gave up 11 service errors to six for the Hawks. Defensively, Quincy had a 37-30 advantage in digs with Mike Contee recording a match-high 14. At the net, the Buckeyes had an 8.5 to 5.5 edge in team blocks. OSU’s Albertson recorded a match-high five assist blocks in the match. Mathews picked up 51 assists in the match while Quincy’s Pedersen had 39.

Ohio State closes out the regular season with road matches at Lewis Friday and at Quincy Saturday in 7 p.m. matches.
