COLUMBUS, Ohio– The No. 14 Ohio State men’s tennis team shut out the No. 66 Michigan State Spartans, 7-0, Saturday afternoon at Jesse Owens West Recreation Center. The Buckeyes (16-2 overall, 5-0 Big Ten) swept all three doubles matches and six singles matches against Michigan State (13-8, 1-5). OSU earned its 13th consecutive win just three short of the all-time program record of 16. The Buckeyes remain undefeated in the Big Ten at 5-0.

“It would have been nice to play outside today, but the weather would not permit it,” Ty Tucker, OSU head coach, said. “We have not been playing solid tennis over the past week, but we played better today.”

The Buckeyes secured the doubles point by downing the Spartans in all three matches. The team of Conor Casey (So., Ontario, Canada/Mississippi) and Jeremy Wurtzman (So., Rochester, N.Y./Florida) defeated Adam Hourani and Jimmy McGuire, 8-3, at the No. 1 position. Adrian Bohane (So., West Palm Beach, Fla./Palm Beach Lakes) and Paul Warkentin (Fr., Santa Barbara, Calif./San Marcos) defeated Chris Mitchell and Eric Simonton, 8-4. Brenton Contini (So., Dover, Ohio/Dover) and Phil Metz (Jr., Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) defeated Mike Jonckheere and Goran Topalo, 8-5, at the No. 3 position.

OSU earned all six singles points. No. 27 Wurtzman beat Mitchell, 6-3, 7-5, at the No. 1 position, to secure OSU’s second point of the game. No. 111 Bohane posted a 6-3, 7-5 victory over MSU’s Topalo. No. 25 Metz defeated Andrew Formanczyk, 6-4, 6-3. Vince Ng (Jr., Broadview Heights, Ohio/University School) came back after losing the first set, 3-6, to defeat Columbus native McGuire, 6-3, 6-4, at the No. 4 position.

Casey and Warkentin both won in super-tiebreaker matches to the Spartans’ Simonton and Cameron Marshall at the No. 5 and No. 6 positions, respectively.

The Buckeyes play host to No. 30 Michigan at noon Sunday at Stickney Tennis Center, weather permitting.
