COLUMBUS, Ohio– The No. 14 Ohio State men’s tennis team pulled off a defeat against the No. 73 Iowa Hawkeyes, 4-3, Sunday afternoon in Iowa City. The Hawkeyes (10-5 overall, 2-2 Big Ten) won the doubles point, but the Buckeyes (14-2, 4-0) came back to score four points in singles sets. OSU clinched the match when Paul Warkentin (Fr., Santa Barbara, Calif./San Marcos) defeated Pete Rose in the first two sets (6-4, 6-7) and Rose retired due to injury in the third set, 4-2 (ret.). The win over Iowa earns the Buckeyes their eleventh consecutive victory.

OSU won the No. 3 doubles match, but was not able to score the doubles point. Brenton Contini (So., Dover, Ohio/Dover) and Phil Metz (Jr., Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) defeated Petar Mandic and Pete Rose, 8-3, at the No. 3 doubles position. Teammates Adrian Bohane (So., West Palm Beach, Fla./Palm Beach Lakes) and Warkentin could not defeat Iowa’s Stuart Waters and Justin Gaard, 8-4, at the No. 1 position. Conor Casey (So., Ontario, Canada/Mississippi) and Jeremy Wurtzman (So., Rochester, N.Y./Florida) lost to Jake Wilson and Hunter Skogman, 8-4.

The Buckeyes scored all of their four points in singles. No. 100 Bohane scored OSU’s first point by defeating Mandic in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3. No. 29 Wurtzman lost the first set 3-6 to Wilson, but came back to defeat Wilson in the final two sets, 6-3, 6-2. Vince Ng (Jr., Broadview Heights, Ohio/University School) earned a point for the Buckeyes by defeating Gaard, 7-5, 6-4, at the No. 5 position.

OSU gave up two points in singles play with Iowa’s Waters defeating No. 20 Metz in the No. 1 position, 6-3, 6-7, 6-3. Casey could not hold Skogman in three sets, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4.

The Buckeyes will continue their road swing at 5 p.m. Wednesday, April 3 against Louisville. The team returns home to play host to No. 54 Michigan State at noon April 6 and Michigan at noon April 7 both matches will be held at Stickney Tennis Center, weather permitting.
