COLUMBUS, Ohio– The No. 14 Ohio State men’s tennis team defeated No. 30 Michigan for the first time since 1993 with a 6-1 decision Sunday afternoon at Stickney Tennis Center. The Buckeyes (17-2 overall, 6-0 Big Ten) ended Michigan’s consecutive win streak against OSU at nine matches while picking up their 14th-consecutive win. OSU’s current win streak is two short of the all-time program record of 16 set last year. The loss drops the Wolverines to 12-6 overall and 3-4 in the Big Ten. The Buckeyes are 12-73-1 vs. Michigan in the all-time series.

“We had a good win today,” Ty Tucker, OSU head coach, said. “It is always nice to beat Michigan in any sport whether it is croquet or air hockey. The guys put forth great effort today. They are playing better and getting their legs back under them.”

OSU started off strong by dominating the doubles matches. At the No. 1 position, Conor Casey (So., Ontario, Canada/Mississippi) and Jeremy Wurtzman (So., Rochester, N.Y./Florida) defeated Chris Shaya and Chris Rolf, 8-4. Adrian Bohane (So., West Palm Beach, Fla./Palm Beach Lakes) and Paul Warkentin (Fr., Santa Barbara, Calif./San Marcos) played a tough match, but were able to defeat Henry Beam and Matt Lockin, 8-6. Brenton Contini (So., Dover, Ohio/Dover) and Phil Metz (Jr., Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) beat Anthony Jackson and Greg Novak, 8-5, at the No. 3 position.

“The fans made the atmosphere come alive today on the courts,” Warkentin said. “We really appreciate the fans coming out and supporting us all season long.”

The Buckeyes also came out strong in the singles matches. No. 25 Metz pulled off a victory against No. 39 Beam by winning the first set and the second set in a tiebreaker, 6-4, 7-6(6). Casey topped Jackson, 6-1, 6-3, at the No. 4 position. Vince Ng (Jr., Broadview Heights, Ohio/University School) defeated Novak, 7-6, 6-2. Warkentin crushed David Anving, 6-1, 6-2, at the No. 6 position. No. 27 Wurtzman was in the lead 4-1 of set one when Michigan’s Ben Cox retired due to injury. No. 111 Bohane played two sets against Lockin but retired before a third set was played.

The Buckeyes will play their final two regular season home matches against Indiana at noon Saturday and against No. 52 Purdue at noon Sunday at Stickney Tennis Center, weather permitting.
