BUFFALO, N.Y. – The No. 13 Ohio State women’s volleyball team improved to 11-0 on the season with a 3-0 (29-27, 25-20, 25-17) victory over Valparaiso Saturday afternoon at the Blue and White Classic in Buffalo, N.Y.
Senior Kaitlyn Leary notched a double-double on the day, finishing with 18 kills and 12 digs. Freshman Taylor Sandbothe totaled 14 kills and six blocks (1s, 5a), while junior Erin Sekinger finished with 11 kills. Senior libero Davionna DiSalvatore had a match-high 15 digs and junior setter Taylor Sherwin finished with 44 assists.
Sarah Dooms led Valparaiso (10-3) with nine kills and 12 digs, while Morganne Longoria had 13 digs. Ellen Vanden Berg finished with seven kills and six blocks (1s, 5a) and Emily Campbell totaled seven kills for the Crusaders.
The two squads began the first set with a back-to-back battle before the Buckeyes took on an early 4-3 lead highlighted by a kill from Leary. The Crusaders responded with a quick 3-0 run to tie the score at 10 apiece. An Ohio State set point was halted by a Valpo kill to put the Crusaders up at at 25-24. Ager exchanging set points, Ohio State took the first set 29-27 with a kill by Sandbothe quickly followed by a kill from Leary.
A kill by Sekinger brought Ohio State to a 10-6 lead early in the second set. Valpo responded by notching two kills and a service ace to go on a 3-0 run to chip away at Ohio State’s lead 10-9. The Buckeyes inched ahead throughout the rest of the set with a handful of two- and three-point runs and eventually took the set, 25-20.
A trio of three-point runs led to a 10-4 Ohio State advantage to open set three. A kill and a solo block from Andrea Kacsits led to a 13-7 lead and a kill from Sekinger sent the Buckeyes on a 4-1 run to set the score at 18-9. A kill from Kylie Randall gave the squad set point at 24-17 and a Kacsits/Sekinger block sealed the 25-17 win.
Ohio State closes out the Blue and White Classic against host Buffalo at 7 p.m. ET in Alumni Arena.
