%^$COLUMBUS, Ohio – Fairfield’s Tom Werney scored with 3:18 left in the second overtime to give the Stags an 8-7 victory over the No. 13 Ohio State men’s lacrosse team Saturday in Fairfield, Conn. The game marked the third consecutive one-goal game between the teams and Fairfield’s first win in the three-game all-time series.%^$

%^$Ohio State drops to 6-4 overall and is 0-1 in the Great Western Lacrosse League. The Stags improve to 5-1 on the season, including a mark of 3-1 in the GWLL. The loss was Ohio State’s second double-overtime loss and marked its fourth one-goal game of the year.%^$

%^$The game was low scoring, as only five goals were scored in the first half. The Buckeyes jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first quarter, on goals by Anthony Gilardi (So., Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) at 10:22, Curtis Smith (Jr., Victoria, British Columbia/Oak Bay) with 8:10 on the clock and Pat Donohue (Jr., West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) with 38 seconds remaining in the quarter.%^$

%^$Fairfield scored the only two goals of the second, with Marc Torrey tallying at 14:46 and Werney scoring with 2:03 left in the half.%^$

%^$The Stags tied the game at three just over a minute into the third quarter on a goal by Rob Scipioni and took their first lead of the game when Werney scored at 8:21. The score remained tied until there was 2:22 remaining in regulation, when Smith scored for the Buckeyes, assisted by Gilardi.%^$

%^$Fairfield tied the game with just 17 seconds remaining to force overtime. The Buckeyes had possession and were running out the clock when the Stags’ Brian Whalen forced a turnover. Fairfield goalkeeper C.J. Kemp scooped up the groundball and fed Kevin Finnerty, who sprinted down the field. Finnerty passed to Torrey, who faked a shot and fed the ball to Garrett Bamann, who finished the fast break to tie the game and send it to overtime.%^$

%^$The first overtime period was scoreless, as each team traded cautious possessions. The Stags won the opening draw of the second overtime, preventing Ohio State from getting the ball. Following a Fairfield timeout, the Stags eventually got the ball to Werney at the top of the 30-yard line. The shot was saved initially, but trickled through the legs of OSU goalie Tony Russo (Jr., Fallston, Md./Calvert Hall) and over the goal line to give Fairfield the win.%^$

%^$Russo was outstanding in goal, as he made 14 saves. Kemp stopped 12 shots for Fairfield. The Buckeyes were 1-for-4 on extra-man offense and held Fairfield scoreless on its four chances.%^$
