COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 13th-ranked Ohio State (16-9 overall, 4-4 Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association) men’s volleyball team fell, 3-0 (30-26, 30-28, 30-24), at No. 12 IPFW Saturday night at the Gates Sports Center. OSU’s Mark Greaves (Sr., Fenton, Mo.) recorded a team-high 19 points in the match with a season-high 17 kills, adding four assist blocks. IPFW’s C.J. Macias scored a match-high 24 points with 18 kills, three ace serves and six assist blocks.

Ohio State opened game one with kills from Stuart Katz (5th/Sr., Port Washington, N.Y.) and Greaves for a 2-0 lead. A Macias kill and his ace serve tied the game at two. The Mastodons took a 3-2 lead on a Serdar Sikca-Brock Ullrich block and kills from Sikca and Colin Lundeen. IPFW held the lead and Ohio State never came closer than two points the rest of the game. With IPFW leading, 27-24, a Greaves kill cut the lead to 27-25. An Ullrich kill made it 28-25. Service errors by both team moved the score to 29-26 with IPFW serving game point. A Lundeen-Josh Stewart block ended the game at 30-26. IPFW hit .308 in the match to .250 for OSU.

The Buckeyes opened game two with the first six points of the game. A Greaves-John Albertson (So./Fr., Manchester, Mo.) block and a kill by Greaves made it 2-0. An ace serve by Sam Stevens (Sr./Jr., Miami, Fla.) and another Greaves-Albertson block forced an IPFW time out at 4-0. A Mastodon error and a third Greaves-Albertson block completed the run at 6-0. The Buckeyes took the lead to seven several times but IPFW slowly reduced the margin. IPFW cut the lead to one at 24-23 on an OSU error. A Robbie Klein (So./Fr., Cincinnati, Ohio)-Daniel Mathews (So., Shorewood, Wis.) block made it 25-23. A Buckeye error made the lead one at 25-24. IPFW tied the game at 25 off a Buckeye error. Tied at 27, two kills from Macias gave IPFW a 29-27 lead. Greaves stopped the game point at 29-28. Macias ended the game with a kill at 30-28, giving the Mastodons a 2-0 lead in the match. IPFW hit .174 for the game to .174 for Ohio State.

Game three opened with two assist blocks from Macias and Sikca for a 2-0 IPFW lead. The Mastodons would hold the lead the entire game expanding the lead to seven at 18-11. At 23-18, IPFW, two Mastodon errors cut the lead to three at 23-20. Macias reached match point at 29-23 with a kill. An Albertson kill held off the match point at 29-24. Macias closed out the game with a kill at 30-24, for a 3-0 Mastodon victory. IPFW hit .400 in the match to .125 for the Buckeyes.

IPFW hit .278 for the match to .178 for Ohio State. The Mastodons had a 52-45 edge in kills while each team recorded four ace serves. Each squad gave up seven service errors. Defensively, IPFW had a 35-29 advantage in digs with Mike Morici picking a match-high nine digs. At the net, the Buckeyes had a 13.5 to 12 edge in team blocks. OSU’s Mathews (two solos, four assists) and Albertson (six assists) joined IPFW’s Macias (six assist blocks) and Stewart (six assist blocks) in sharing match-high honors. Mastodon setter Lundeen recorded 45 assists in the match with OSU’s Mathews picking up 37.

The Buckeyes return to St. John Arena for a three-match home stand. Ohio State hosts 11th-ranked Penn State Tuesday and then returns to conference play by hosting Ball State Friday and Quincy Saturday. All matches begin a 7 p.m.
