BIG RAPIDS, Mich. – The No. 13/14 Ohio State men’s hockey team was defeated by Ferris State, 5-2, Friday at Ewigleben Ice Arena in a Central Collegiate Hockey Association matchup. The teams will completed the series at 7:05 p.m. Saturday at Ewigleben Ice Arena.
Ohio State drops to 16-13-0 on the year and 11-10-0 in the league. The Bulldogs improve to 14-12-3, 9-11-1 in the CCHA.
There was no scoring in the first; each team was 0-for-1 on the power play and put 11 shots on goal.
Ferris scored the first three goals of the period, in a span of 5:30. Jeff Legue scored at 4:43 before Brett Smith completed a 2-on-0 just 47 seconds later at 5:30; both goals came with the teams skating four aside. Legue added his second goal of the game at 10:13, as he forced a turnover at the Ferris State blueline and skated in on a breakaway. The Buckeyes got on the scoreboard late in the period (17:23) with a 5-on-3 power-play goal. Scott May (Sr., Surrey, British Columbia) converted a Paul Caponigri (Sr., Oak Park, Ill.) pass right at the side of the net, with JB Bittner (Jr., Pittsburgh, Pa.) picking up the second assist. Ohio State outshot the Bulldogs in the period, 14-7. Ohio State was 1-for-3 on the power play in the period and went into the third on a power play. The Bulldogs did not have a power-play chance.
Greg Rallo extended the Bulldogs’ lead to three (4-1) with a goal 2:26 into the third. Legue completed his hat trick with a shorthanded goal, the second allowed by the Buckeyes on the year, at 13:05. May added his second goal of the game, assisted by Dan Knapp (So., Rochester, Mich.) and Andrew Schembri (Fr., Mississauga, Ontario), on the power play at 18:32. OSU outshot the Bulldogs in the period, 17-9.
Ohio State was 2-for-6 on the power play in the game and stopped the Bulldogs on their two chances.
Ohio State outshot Ferris State in the game, 42-27. In net, Mike Betz (Sr., Elizabeth, Pa.) made 22 saves. Mike Brown had 40 stops for the Bulldogs.
