MARQUETTE, Mich. – The No. 13/14 Ohio State men’s hockey team beat Northern Michigan, 6-1, Saturday in Berry Events Center. The win gives the Buckeyes a split of the series. Paul Caponigri led the Buckeyes with three goals, the squad’s first hat trick in 129 games, dating back to Oct. 21, 2000 vs. Niagara. Freshman Sean Collins had three assists in the game, his first points as a Buckeye.
The Buckeyes improve to 7-4-0 on the year and 6-2-0 in league play. The Buckeyes are in first place alone in the CCHA with 12 points. The Wildcats fall to 4-4-0, 3-3-0 in the CCHA.
In the first period, Caponigri (Sr., Oak Park, Ill.) got the Buckeyes on the board at 5:59 with an unassisted goal. He picked up a loose puck deep in the NMU zone and skated in on Wildcat goalie Craig Kowalski, skating around a NMU goalie that had dropped to block the shot and beating the goalie low. Collins (Fr., Troy, Mich.) and Dave Steckel (Sr., West Bend, Wis.) assisted on the goal. Caponigri increased the Buckeye lead to two as he beat Kowalski high at 17:14. Doug Andress and Collins picked up the assists on the goal. The helper marked the first point of Collins’ career. The Buckeyes put 10 shots on net in the stanza, while holding the Wildcats to just two.
The Buckeyes added three goals in the second. JB Bittner (Jr., Pittsburgh, Pa.) scored just nine seconds into the period. Rod Pelley (So., Kitimat, British Columbia) won the faceoff at center ice and Collins picked it up, passing it to Scott May (Sr., Surrey, British Columbia) at the NMU blueline. May passed to Bittner, who beat Kowalski high for his seventh goal of the year. The Wildcats cut the Buckeye lead to two (3-1) at 9:06, when Dirk Southern scored a 5×3 power-play goal. Caponigri completed the hat trick, the first of his career, at 13:50 of the second, taking a pass from Dan Knapp (So., Rochester, Mich.) and scoring his eighth goal of the season. Reed Whiting (Sr., Rochester, Minn.) ended the scoring in the stanza, as he beat Kowalski with a shot from the blue line for his first goal of the season. Lee Spector (Jr., Buffalo Grove, Ill.) and Daymen Bencharski (Sr., Beaverlodge, Alberta) picked up the helpers on the goal. The Buckeyes had eight shots in the period, the Wildcats four.
Matt Beaudoin (Fr., Rock Forest, Ill.) scored 2:20 into the third period, putting in the rebound of an Andrew Schembri (Fr., Mississauga, Ontario) shot for his first career goal. Dave Barton (Fr., Calgary, Alberta) also assisted on the goal, his first career point.
POSTGAME NOTES Collins’ three assists, his first career points, were a team season-high. The last time a Buckeye had three helpers was May vs. Bowling Green, Jan. 17, 2003.

Whiting’s goal in the second marked his second career marker and his first since Dec. 1, 2002 at Miami.
The Buckeyes improve to 5-0-0 on Saturday, while the team is 2-4 on Friday.
The Buckeyes have not lost more than one game in a row this season. The team now is 4-0-0 following a loss.
