COLUMBUS, Ohio – Behind a career-high 26.5 points from Danielle Meyer (So., Cincinnati, Ohio), 12th-ranked Ohio State (1-0) defeated Toledo (1-1), 3-0 (30-22, 30-21, 30-21) to open the 2005 season. Meyer recorded a career-high 22 kills while hitting .529. She added an ace serve, a solo block and five assist blocks and collected five digs in the contest. Amanda Miller (Sr., Littleton, Colo.) added 9.5 points and Marisa Main (Jr., Louisville, Ky.) eight for the Buckeyes. Kate Bean recorded 10.5 points for the Rockets with Kelsey Culver and Chelsey Poquette adding 7.5 each.

Tied at nine in game one, the Buckeyes had a six to one point run to open a 15-10 lead. A kill by Main, an ace by Meyer and a Toledo error made it 12-9. A Culver kill cut the margin to 12-10 but kills from Miller and Ami Stevens (So., Centerburg, Ohio) and a Rocket error made it 15-10. A Felicia Jones (Jr., Concord, Ont.) kill ended the game at 30-22, OSU. Ohio State hit .343 for the game to .103 for Toledo

The Buckeyes broke a three-all tie in game two with two Toledo errors and a Rebecca Kastein (Sr., Mt. Lebanon, Pa.) ace serve. At 7-5, Ohio State, a five point run opened a 12-5 lead for the Buckeyes. The run included a block by Main and Meyer and four Rocket errors. With OSU leading 29-19, two Toledo points cut the lead to 29-21 but a Jones kill closed the game at 30-21. The Buckeyes hit .429 for the game to .057 for Toledo.

Tied at seven in game three, a Poquette kill and a Culver solo block gave Toledo a 9-7 lead. Toledo held the lead until three Rocket errors put OSU ahead, 19-18. A Buckeye error tied the game at 19. A Rocket error and Buckeye kills from Jones and Meyer gave OSU a 22-19 lead. A Main – Nicole Britenriker (So., Cincinnati, Ohio) block set match point at 29-21 and a Rocket error ended the game at 30-21. Ohio State hit .429 for the game to -.065 for the Rockets.

For the match, Ohio State hit .398 to .038 for Toledo. The Buckeyes had a 52-28 advantage in kills and a five-four margin in ace serves. The Buckeyes gave up 10 service errors to eight for Toledo. Defensively, the Buckeyes had a 42-26 advantage in digs with Stevens recording a match-high 11 for OSU and Kastein adding 10. Toledo’s Lora Sarich had a team-high 10 digs for the Rockets. At the net, the Buckeyes enjoyed a 10 to four margin in team blocks. OSU’s Meyer posted a match-high six blocks with a solo and five assists. Main contributed four assist blocks and added a match-high 39 assists.

Next Friday, Ohio State will host the Sports Imports Classic in St. John Arena, facing No. 1 ranked Nebraska at 7 p.m. Michigan faces No. 24 Long Beach State at 5 p.m. On Saturday, Michigan plays Nebraska at 5:30 p.m. Saturday and Ohio State hosts Long Beach State at 7:30 p.m.
