ITHACA, N.Y. – Buckeye senior forward Dave Steckel scored his second goal of the game with 53 seconds remaining to give the No. 12 Ohio State men’s hockey team a 4-3 over No. 11 Cornell Saturday at James Lynah Rink in Ithaca, N.Y.

The win improves the Buckeyes’ record to 10-5-0 on the year, while the Big Red fall to 3-2-2 on the season. OSU went 2-0-0 on the weekend, with a victory over Colgate, 2-1, Saturday.

Steckel also had an assist in the game for a team-high three points, while Paul Caponigri had a goal and an assist.

The Buckeyes scored the only goal of the opening period. Dave Steckel (Sr., West Bend Wis.) scored his seventh goal of the season 3:19 in, taking a pass from JB Bittner (Jr., Pittsburgh, Pa.) and beating Cornell goalie David McKee from just outside the crease with a wrist shot. Lee Spector (Jr., Buffalo Grove, Ill.) also assisted on the goal. Each team had six shots in the period. Ohio State was scoreless on its one power-play chance and held the Big Red scoreless on one opportunity.

The teams combined to score four goals in the second, tallying twice each, to go into the last period with the Buckeyes leading, 3-2. Paul Caponigri (Sr., Oak Park, Ill.) scored just 39 seconds into the period, putting in the rebound of a Steckel shot while lying on the ice for his 10th goal of the season. Nate Guenin (So., Aliquippa, Pa.) also assisted on the goal. Cornell then tallied their first goal of the night at 16:29, with Shane Hynes scoring on the power play. The Buckeyes quickly responded with a power-play goal of their own, as Bittner’s shot got through traffic for his team-best fifth power-play marker of the season. Rod Pelley (So., Kitimat, British Columbia) and Scott May (Sr., Surrey, British Columbia) assisted on the tally, which came at 17:52. Cornell then got within one with another power-play tally, as Ryan Vesce scored with just 39 seconds left in the period. The teams each had 11 shots on net in the period.

Cornell tied the game at three with a power-play goal by Matt Moulson 6:17 into the third period. Steckel put the Buckeyes ahead with his second goal of the game with 53 seconds remaining, assisted by Caponigri and Doug Andress (Sr., Iroquois Falls, Ontario). The Big Red pulled their goalie to push for the equalizer, but could not get the puck in the net. The teams each had nine shots on net in the period.

In the game, Ohio State was 1-for-3 on the power play. The Big Red went 3-for-8.

OSU goalie Mike Betz (Sr., Elizabeth, Pa.) made 23 saves on 26 Cornell shots in the game, while McKee had 22 saves on 26 Buckeye chances.

The Buckeyes will return to action at 7:05 p.m. Saturday (Nov. 29) when they travel to Bowling Green to face in-state rival Bowling Green in BGSU Ice Arena. The squad will play its last home game of 2003 the next weekend, as it has a home-and-home series with Miami. The Buckeyes and RedHawks will face off at 7:05 p.m. Friday, Dec. 5 in Value City Arena in Columbus and at 7:35 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6 in Goggin Ice Arena in Oxford, Ohio.

GAME NOTES
Bittner’s goal was his ninth of the season, marking a career high. He had eight as a freshman and seven last year.

The Buckeyes power-play goal was their first in six games, dating back to the Alaska Fairbanks contest Nov. 1.

May’s assist gives him 94 (35-59) points in his career, just six shy of the 100-point mark.

Cornell’s power play goals marked the first time the squad gave up power-play tallies in back-to-back games since Oct. 3-Nov. 11, a stretch of three games.
