COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 12th-ranked Ohio State (17-6 overall, 10-2 Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association) men’s volleyball team, trailing Ball State (11-13, 6-5) two games to one, rallied to defeat the Cardinals, 3-2 (30-21, 29-31, 26-30, 30-21, 15-10) Friday night in Worthen Arena. OSU’s Mark Greaves (Jr., Fenton, Mo.) scored a match-high 22 points for the Buckeyes with a match-high 19 kills, an ace serve and four assist blocks. Ball State’s Luis Castera had a team-high 19 points with 18 kills, and two assist blocks.

Game one saw Ball State leading, 5-4, before an eight-point Buckeye scoring run gave Ohio State a 13-5 lead. The Buckeyes held the lead, winning the game, 30-21 with a Greaves kill. Ohio State hit .303 in the game to .000 for Ball State.

In a close game two that saw 13 ties and four lead changes, a kill by Cardinal Evan Berg gave Ball State a 29-27 lead and serving for the game. Scott Spurlock (Sr., Stow, Ohio), with a kill, made it 29-28. A Greaves kill then tied the game at 29. Following a Ball State time out, a Castera kill set game point at 30-29. Patrick Durbin’s kill ended the game at 31-29, tying the match at one game each. Ball State hit .234 for the game to Ohio State’s .152.

Game three continued the close play of game two with 14 ties and four lead changes. Tied at 18, a kill from Greaves, a Layne Dreven (Jr., Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Greaves block and a Cardinal error put Ohio State ahead, 21-18. Ball State then scored six consecutive points to lead 24-21. The Cardinals took a four-point lead at 29-25 with a Zoran Grabovac kill. A Cardinal service error cut the lead to 29-26 but a Berg kill ended the game at 30-26, Ball State, giving the Cardinals a two to one lead in games. Ball State hit .245 in the game to .175 for the Buckeyes. In game four, Ball State tied the game at 15-all with a Scott Bushong kill. The Buckeyes regained the lead with a Mike Wauligman (Sr., Cincinnati, Ohio) kill and with a Cardinal error and a Spurlock kill when ahead, 18-15. With Ohio State leading, 25-21, the Buckeyes with two kills from Dreven, a Dreven-Greaves block and an ace serve from Stuart Katz (Sr., Port Washington, N.Y.) reached game point at 29-21. A Ball State error ended the game at 30-21, OSU, to tie the match at two games each. In the game, Ohio State hit .444 to Ball State’s .105.

Game five saw OSU break a three-all tie with a Wauligman-Dreven block and a Wauligman kill to open a 5-3 lead. The Buckeyes held the lead and at 13-10 with a Dreven kill and a Spurlock-Daniel Mathews (Fr., Shorewood, Wis.) block won the game, 15-10, to win the match 3-2. The Buckeyes hit .308 in the game to .167 for Ball State.

For the match, Ohio State hit .265 to Ball State’s .161. The Cardinals had a 72 to 70 advantage in kills while Ohio State had a three to two edge in ace serves. Ball State gave up 14 service errors to 13 for Ohio State. The Cardinals had a defensive edge in digs, 71-61 of 71. Cardinal Ian Peckler had a match-high 19 digs for Ball State while OSU’s Mathews recorded a career-high 14. At the net, Ohio State enjoyed a 17.5 to eight margin in team blocks. OSU’s Dreven recorded a match-high 10 assist blocks with Mathews and Spurlock adding six assists each. Cardinal setter Dave Carlson posted 64 assists in the match to 53 for OSU’s Mathews.

Ohio State returns home at 2 p.m. Sunday when the Buckeyes host third-ranked Penn State (24-3) in St. John Arena.
