COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 12th-ranked Ohio State (10-3 overall) men’s volleyball team dropped a 30-23, 30-23, 31-29 decision to Rutgers-Newark (5-4) Friday at the Golden Dome Classic in Newark, New Jersey. OSU’s Mark Greaves (Jr., Fenton, Mo.) scored a team-high 12 points in the match with Andy Cole (Jr., Glendale, Wis.) adding 11. Greaves had 10 kills (.235), an ace serve and two assist blocks while Cole contributed a team-high 11 kills (.227) in the match. Scarlet Raider Brian Honsberger scored a match-high 20.5 points for Rutgers-Newark with a match-high 19 kills (.486), a solo block and an assist block. Eric Honsberger contributed 15 points with 14 kills (.345) and an ace serve.

Rutgers-Newark broke a 10-all tie with an E. Honsberger kill and an OSU error to take a 12-10 lead. The Scarlet Raiders held the lead going on to win the game, 30-23. Rutgers-Newark hit .467 in the game to .250 for OSU.

Ohio State took a 5-0 lead in game two. Trailing 14-11, Rutgers-Newark tied the game at 14. At 15-all, a B. Honsberger kill started a four-point run to take a 19-15 lead. The Scarlet Knights held the lead, winning the game 30-23. Rutgers-Newark hit .394 for the game to .205 for the Buckeyes.

Rutgers-Newark opened game three with a 3-0 lead. A Greaves kill tied the game at 26. A Scarlet Raider error gave OSU a 27-26 edge. E. Honsberger’s kill tied the game at 27 for Rutgers-Newark. Mike Wauligman (Sr., Cincinnati, Ohio) gave OSU a 28-27 lead with a kill. A Rutgers-Newark block by Ben Bostaph and Graydon Ainsworth tied the game at 28. Scott Spurlock (Sr., Stow, Ohio) gave the Buckeyes a 29-28 lead with a kill. B. Honsberger’s kill tied the game at 29. Two attack errors by OSU ended the game at 31-29. The Scarlet Raiders hit .371 in the game to .189 for Ohio State. For the match, Rutgers-Newark hit .408 to Ohio State’s .213. The Buckeyes had a 53-52 edge in kills while Rutgers-Newark had a two to one advantage in ace serves. OSU gave up six service errors to five for the Scarlet Raiders. Defensively, Ohio State had a 22-21 margin in digs with OSU’s Wauligman collecting a match-high nine. At the net, Rutgers-Newark enjoyed a seven to 6.5 margin in team blocks. Scarlet Raider Henry Richardson recorded a match-high five blocks with a solo and four assists. OSU’s Daniel Mathews (Fr., Shorewood, Wis.) had 47 assists in the match with Ainsworth recording 48 for the Scarlet Raiders.

Ohio State continues play at the Golden Dome Classic Saturday when they face No. 5 Penn State (10-2) at 5 p.m.
