COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 12th-ranked Ohio State (4-3 overall, 0-1 Midwest Intercollegiate Volleyball Association) men’s volleyball team rallied against No. 14 Lewis (4-5, 2-1) to send the match into game five, but fell short, losing to the defending MIVA and NCAA champion Flyers, 30-25, 23-30, 30-26, 28-30, 15-12. OSU had its five hitters register double-figure points with Mark Greaves (So., Fenton, Mo.) recording a team-high 19 points with 12 kills, two ace serve and a career-high 10 assist blocks. Scott Spurlock (Jr., Stow, Ohio) added 18.5 points (12-0-0-13), Adam Pedersen (Sr., Muskego, Wis.), 18, (13-1-1-6), Mike Wauligman (Sr., Cincinnati, Ohio), 17.5, (14-0-0-7) and Andy Cole (So., Glendale, Wis.), 14 (12-0-1-2). Flyer Jeff Soler scored a match-high 27 points (22-1-2-4) for Lewis with Fabiano Barreto adding 23 (20-0-2-2).

Lewis captured game one, 30-25. Soler and Barreto had four kills each for the Flyers while Spurlock had four kills for the Buckeyes. The Flyers hit .286 in the game to .088 for Ohio State.

Ohio State came back to take game two, 30-23 with a .667 hitting percentage. The Flyers hit .294. Pedersen, Cole and Wauligman had four kills each for OSU while Barreto collected seven for Lewis. The Buckeyes had a solo block and five assist blocks in the game and did not allow Lewis a block.

Lewis took a 2-1 lead in the match with a 30-26 game three win. Soler had seven kills for Lewis while Cole produced five for the Buckeyes. The Flyers hit .375 in the game to OSU’s .219.

Ohio State overcame seven Flyer team blocks in game four to tie the match with a 30-28 game four win. OSU’s Greaves and Wauligman had six kills each in the game while Flyers’ Dared Dayton and Soler produced four each. The Buckeyes hit .206 for the game to .182 for Lewis. Lewis opened the deciding fifth game with a 4-1 lead. OSU rallied to tie the game at four. The Flyers took a 10-6 lead only to see the Buckeyes respond with a four-point run, including a kill and an ace serve from Pedersen, to tie the game at 10. Tied at 11, a Mark Peckham (Sr., London, Ontario) ace serve gave the Buckeyes a 12-11 lead. An OSU error tied the game at 12. Flyer Enrique Escalante’s ace serve gave Lewis a 13-12 lead. Back-to-back kills by Dayton closed out the game for Lewis at 15-12, giving the Flyers the 3-2 victory. Lewis hit .286 for the game to .154 for the Buckeyes.

For the match, Lewis hit .284 for the match to OSU’s .255. The Flyers had a 76-63 advantage in kills while each squad recorded four ace serves. The Flyers gave up 15 service aces to 12 for Ohio State. Defensively, the Buckeyes had a 40-38 margin in digs with OSU’s Greaves and Lewis’ Ryan Stuntz each recording a match-high 15. At the net, Ohio State had a 22-18 advantage in team blocks. OSU’s Spurlock collected a match-high 13 assist blocks in the contest with Buckeye Greaves adding 10. Flyer setter Brandon Sisk recorded a match-high 62 assists with OSU’s Peckham picking up 59.

OHIO STATE MATCH NOTES:

OSU’s 22 team blocks is a season-high (previous 11.5 against Juniata). The 40 assist blocks is a season high (previous 23 against Juniata). The 40 assists ranks fifth all-time in OSU match records.

Mark Greaves recorded career-highs of 15 digs and 10 assist blocks. His previous high in digs was 10 at Findlay in 2003. His previous high in blocks was six assists against Brigham Young (Jan. 24).

Adam Pedersen recorded season-highs of 13 kills, seven total blocks (1-6) and 18 points. He previously had 11 kills, three assist blocks and 12.5 points against Juniata.

Scott Spurlock recorded a career-high 13 assist blocks in the match. His previous best was nine in two matches, the last against IPFW in 2003. He produced a season-high 12 kills with his previous best being 11 against Brigham Young (Jan. 24).
