COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 12th-ranked Ohio State (17-6 overall) men’s volleyball team dropped a 3-1 (30-32, 30-25, 30-20, 30-21) decision to third-ranked Penn State (24-3) Sunday afternoon in St. John Arena. OSU’s Andy Cole (Jr., Glendale, Wis.) scored a match-high 20.5 points for the Buckeyes with 19 kills (.244), a solo block and an assist block. Penn State’s Matt Proper had a team-high 19.5 points for the Nittany Lions with 16 kills (.281), an ace serve and five assist blocks. Proper was one of five Penn State players who recorded double-figure points in the match.

In game one, Penn State held a four-point lead in the game at 25-21. Kills by Layne Dreven (Jr., Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Mike Wauligman (Sr., Cincinnati, Ohio) and a Buckeye service error cut the Penn State lead to 26-23. A Cole kill and two Nittany Lion errors tied the game at 26. A Buckeye error and a Proper ace serve made it 28-26. An OSU block from Daniel Mathews (Fr., Shorewood, Wis.) and Scott Spurlock (Sr., Stow, Ohio) and a Cole kill tied the game at 28. A Penn State error and a kill by Dan O’Dell made it 29-all. A Keith Kowal kill set game point at 30-29 for Penn State. A Penn State service error tied the game at 30. An OSU block from Mark Greaves (Jr., Fenton, Mo.) and Spurlock gave OSU a 31-30 lead and serving game point. The Buckeyes won the game, 32-30, with a kill by Greaves. In the game, Ohio State hit .500 to .429 for Penn State.

Ohio State held an early 7-4 lead in game two, but straight Penn State points gave the Nittany Lions an 8-7 lead. Tied at 15, two OSU errors, kills by O’Dell, Kowal and Kevin Wentzel and a Kowal-Wentzel block opened a 21-15 Nittany Lion lead. OSU closed to within two at 23-21, but Penn State held the lead, winning the game, 30-25, to tie the match. The Nittany Lions hit .438 in the game to .176 for the Buckeyes. Tied at two in game three, Penn State scored seven consecutive points to open a 9-2 lead. The Nittany Lions expanded the lead to win the game, 30-20. Penn State hit .542 to OSU’s .129.

In game four, Penn State never trailed, opening a 2-0 lead and quickly taking the lead to five at 7-2. The Nittany Lions, at 28-21, used a Nate Meerstein kill and a Proper-Kowal block to win the game, 30-21, and win the match, 3-1. Penn State hit .455 in the game to .176 for Ohio State.

For the game, Penn State hit .460 to OSU’s .248. The Nittany Lions had a 72-65 margin in kills while Ohio State had a three to two advantage in ace serves. Penn State gave up 11 service errors to nine for the Buckeyes. Defensively, Penn State had a 28-27 margin in digs with OSU’s Greaves recording a match-high eight. At the net, the Nittany Lions had a 17.5 to nine advantage in team blocks. PSU’s Kowal posted a match-high 12 assists in the match. O’Dell recorded 60 assists for Penn State while OSU’s Mathews had 59.

Ohio State (10-2 Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association) returns to conference play next Friday when the Buckeyes host Lewis (14-12, 8-4 MIVA) and face conference leader and ninth-ranked Loyola (23-1, 13-0) Saturday in St. John Arena. Both matches begin at 7 p.m.
