COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 12th-ranked Ohio State (6-2 overall) men’s volleyball team dropped a 3-1 (30-20, 22-30, 30-21, 31-29) decision to sixth-ranked Penn State Saturday night in Rec Hall on the Penn State campus. The match was broadcast live by College Sports Television (CSTV). OSU’s Mark Greaves (Jr., Fenton, Mo.) scored a team-high 19.5 points for Ohio State with Mike Wauligman (Sr., Cincinnati, Ohio) adding 13.5 and Stuart Katz (Sr., Port Washington, N.Y.) 12. Penn State’s Matt Proper recorded a match-high 25.5 points for the Nittany Lions with Alex Gutor adding 25 and Nate Meerstein, 10.5.

Penn State opened the match with the first four points and never trailed in game one to win 30-20. The Nittany Lions hit .552 to OSU’s .120.

Game two advanced to 14-all after eight ties on a Wauligman kill. The Buckeyes then scored six consecutive points to open a 20-14 lead. The run began with a block by Scott Spurlock (Sr., Stow, Ohio) and Katz, two Penn State errors and a Spurlock solo block as Penn State called time out at 18-14. A Greaves kill and a Wauligman-Spurlock block made it 20-14. The Buckeyes held the lead and a Wauligman kill set game point at 29-22. A Penn State error ended the game at 30-22. Ohio State hit .171 for the game to .062 for the Nittany Lions.

Game three opened with Penn State kills by Proper and Gutor and never trailed in the game. A Gutor kill closed out the game at 30-21 for Penn State. The Nittany Lions hit .342 for the game to .147 for the Buckeyes.

Game four saw seven lead changes and 17 ties. At 22-all, Buckeye kills from Katz and Greaves gave OSU a 24-22 lead. At 26-24, a Penn State error, an ace serve by Sam Stevens (Jr., Miami, Fla.) and a block by Spurlock-Wauligman gave the Buckeyes a 29-24 lead, serving game point. Penn State held off four game points, tying the game at 29. A Buckeye error and a Gutor kill completed a seven-point run by the Nittany Lions to win the game at 31-29 and the match, 3-1. Penn State hit .195 for the game to .122 for the Buckeyes. Penn State hit .279 for the match to .141 for the Buckeyes. The Nittany Lions had a 65-56 advantage in kills with PSU’s Gutor recording a match-high 23. Penn State had a four to two margin in aces with Aaron Smith recording two for the Nittany Lions. PSU gave up 16 service errors to seven for OSU. Defensively, Penn State edged the Buckeyes in digs, 37-36. OSU’s Katz recorded a match-high 13 digs. At the net, the Nittany Lions had a 19.5 to 12 margin in team blocks. OSU’s Spurlock had a match-high nine blocks with a solo and eight assists. PSU setter Dan O’Dell collected 50 assists with OSU’s Daniel Mathews (Fr., Shorewood, Wis.) recording 45.

Next week Ohio State returns to Pennsylvania to face Juniata Friday, Feb. 4 and begin Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association play at Mercyhurst Saturday, Feb. 5. Both matches begin at 7 p.m.
