COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 12th-ranked Ohio State (10-2 overall, 3-0 Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association) men’s volleyball team, with four student-athletes scoring double-figure points, defeated Quincy (3-5, 0-4), 3-1 (26-30, 30-16, 30-26, 30-25) Sunday afternoon in St. John Arena. OSU’s Andy Cole (Jr., Glendale, Wis.) scored a team-high 18 points in the match with Mark Greaves (Jr., Fenton, Mo.) adding 17.5, Layne Dreven (Jr., Pittsburgh, Pa.) 16 and Mike Wauligman (Sr., Cincinnati, Ohio) 14 for the Buckeyes. Quincy’s Branden Been recorded a match-high 21 points in the contest for the Hawks with Jon Moreno adding 17 and Ed Ryan, 10.5. The Buckeye victory marked the 400th win at Ohio State for head coach Pete Hanson. His OSU record stands at 400-233 and is 414-245 in his career including a year as head coach of the Wyoming women’s squad.

Quincy broke a 4-4 tie in game one with a Been kill and with two OSU error took a 7-4 lead. The Hawks held a 28-22 lead when two kills from Sam Stevens (Jr., Miami, Fla.), a solo block by Dreven and a Quincy error cut the lead to 28-26. A Hawk kill from Been and a Buckeye error ended the game at 30-26, Quincy. Ohio State hit .419 in the game to .359 for Quincy.

Ohio State opened game two with a Cole kill and a Hawk error to take a 2-0 lead. An OSU error made it 2-1. A Greaves kill and a Hawk error made it 4-1. At 8-5, the Buckeyes expanded the lead with a Cole kill, a Hawk error and an ace serve by Wauligman to open an 11-5 lead. OSU built the lead to 10 at 25-16 before a five-point run ended the game at 30-16. A kill and ace serve by Greaves started the run. A Wauligman kill and a Hawk error set game point at 29-16. Dreven’s kill ended the game at 30-16, OSU. The Buckeyes hit .483 to .292 for Quincy.

Game three saw Quincy take a 5-1 lead with three kills from been, an ace serve by Moreno and Buckeye error. Quincy held a 12-9 lead when a Cole kill and a Hawk error made it 12-11. Ryan’s kill made it 13-11. An exchange of errors made it 14-12. Kills by Wauligman and Daniel Mathews (Fr., Shorewood, Wis.) tied the game at 14. Three service errors, two by OSU and one from Quincy gave the Hawks a 16-15 lead. Cole’s kill tied the game at 12 and Wauligman’s kill put OSU ahead, 17-16. At 23-21, OSU, a Moreno kill and a block by Been and Moreno tied the game at 23. OSU regained the lead at 25-23 with kills from Spurlock and Greaves. A Buckeye error closed the lead to 25-24. OSU kills from Cole and Dreven made it 27-24, Buckeyes. A Quincy kill from Ryan Ehnert and an OSU error cut the lead to 27-26. Kills from Greaves and Dreven set game point at 29-26 and with a Hawk error the Buckeyes won the game, 30-26. Ohio State hit .462 in the game to .381 for Quincy.

Ohio State held an 8-5 lead in game four before a Moreno kill and a Buckeye error cut the margin to 8-7. OSU kills from Spurlock and Greaves gave the Buckeyes a 10-7 lead. Hawk kills from Moreno and been made it 10-9. At 11-10, A Dreven kill, a Dreven-Greaves block and a Greaves block gave Ohio State a 14-10 lead. Quincy, with kills from Been and Niels Pedersen made it 14-12. OSU, with a Dreven kill held a 15-12 lead. Two OSU errors and back-to-back ace serves from Pedersen gave Quincy a 16-15 lead. Dreven’s kill tied the game at 16. An OSU error, an ace serve from Ehnert and a Ryan kill opened a three-point lead for Quincy at 19-16. Ohio State responded with a Wauligman kill, a Cole-Spurlock block and a Hawk error to tie the game at 19. At 21-all, Buckeye kills from Greaves and Dreven put OSU ahead, 23-21. An OSU service error made it 23-22. Cole’s kill made it 24-22. A kill from Quincy’s Been cut the lead to 24-23. A kill from Greaves and a Hawk error opened a 26-23 Buckeye lead. A service error by OSU made it 26-24. A Mathews kill and two Hawk errors set match point at 29-24. Ryan’s kill stopped the try at 29-25. The Buckeyes closed out the match with a Cole kill for a 30-25 win in the game and a 3-1 victory for the match. OSU hit .452 in the game to .250 for Quincy.

For the match, Ohio State hit .454 to Quincy’s .299. The Buckeyes posted 74 kills in the match to 53 for the Hawks. Quincy recorded six ace serves to three for the Buckeyes with Pedersen and Been posting two each for the Hawks. Ohio State gave up 18 service errors to 13 for the Hawks. OSU had a season-high 46 digs to 32 for Quincy. OSU’s Conor Martin (Fr., Avon Lake, Ohio) and Mathews shared match-high honors with 12 each while Quincy’s Eric Wooldridge had 11. At the net, Quincy edged Ohio State in team blocks, 6.5 to six. OSU’s Dreven recorded a match-high five blocks (one solo, four assists) in the match for the Buckeyes. Daniel Mathews (Fr., Shorewood, Wis.) posted a match-high 63 assists in the match for Ohio State while Wooldridge had 32 and Pedersen 19 for Quincy.

Ohio State goes on the road for the next two weeks starting with facing Rutgers-Newark (4-4) and No. 4 Penn State (9-2) at the Golden Dome Classic at Newark, New Jersey next weekend. OSU will face host Rutgers-Newark Friday, Feb. 18 at 7 p.m. and play No. 4 Penn State Saturday, Feb. 19 at 5 p.m.

NOTES:

Ohio State is 3-0 in conference play and has won 13 consecutive MIVA regular season conference matches (3 in 2005 and 10 in 2004). OSU has won 10 consecutive home MIVA regular season conference matches (2 in 2004 and 8 in 2004) and has won 18 consecutive regular season home matches (7 in 2005 and 11 in 2004).

Scott Spurlock hit a career-high .750 against Quincy with nine kills in 12 attempts with no errors. His previous best was .727 (8-0-11) in the first Springfield match.

Andy Cole had a season-high eight digs against Quincy. His previous best this season was seven against Rutgers-Newark.

Mike Wauligman had a season-high 13 kills and hit a season-high .500 (13-2-22) against Quincy. His previous best in kills this season was 11 in two matches and his previous best in hitting this season was .474 (11-2-19) against Findlay.

Layne Dreven had a career-high 13 kills against Quincy. His previous best was 11 at St. Francis. Dreven hit .647 (13-2-17) against Quincy and in his last three matches (at Mercyhurst, 6-0-6, 1.000; Ball State, 8-0-11, career-high .727; Quincy 13-2-17, .647) is hitting .735 (27-2-34).

Libero Conor Martin had a career-high 12 digs against Quincy. His previous high was nine against St. Francis.
