COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 12th-ranked Ohio State (18-10 overall, 11-5 Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association) men’s volleyball used a solid team performance to defeat Mercyhurst (6-10, 3-13), 3-0 (30-25, 30-21, 30-21) Saturday evening in St. John Arena. OSU’s Pieter Olree (Sr., Reading, Pa.) scored a match-high 24 kills (.700) with Tom Trantow (Sr., River Forest, Ill.) adding 13 (.409) and Mike Wauligman (So., Cincinnati, Ohio) 10 (.615). Laker Dave Schmidl (Fr., Webster, N.Y.) had a team-high 11 kills (.261) for Mercyhurst with Alex Laama (Jr., Wildwood, Ill.) (.235) and Bill VanCise (Fr., Centerville, Pa.) (.000) adding five each.

Game one started with eight ties, the last at nine-all. Kills by Trantow and Garcia gave OSU an 11-9 lead. A Buckeye service error made it 11-10 and an OSU hitting error tied the game at 11. A Garcia kill, two from Olree and a block by Adam Pedersen (So., Muskego, Wis.) and Trantow opened a 15-11 lead for the Buckeyes. A Schmidl kill stopped the run making it 15-12. Kills by Trantow, Olree and Jon Schultz (Sr., Oak Park, Ill.) gave the Buckeyes an 18-12 lead. Two OSU and one Mercyhurst error moved the score to 19-14. A VanCise kill made it 19-15. A Laker error and a Trantow ace serve expanded the lead to six at 21-15. Schmidl and Garcia exchanged kills to make it 22-16. A Buckeye error and a Laker block by T. J. Wilson (So., Johnstown, Pa.) and Jon Samolis (Jr., Lake Zurich, Ill.) cut the margin to 22-18. Two Garcia kills and an OSU error made it 24-19. A Mercyhurst error and a Pedersen kill made it 26-19. Kills by Laama and Garcia moved the score to 27-20. A Schmidl kill and a Buckeye error closed the lead to 27-22. Trantow’s kill put the score at 28-22. Each squad had a service error to move the score to 29-23. A Schmidl kill and an ace serve by Jim Ax (So., Pittsburgh, Pa.) cut the lead to 29-25 but Olree connected for a kill to end the game at 30-25. The Buckeyes hit .552 for the game to .320 for Mercyhurst.

Ohio State started game two with two Olree kills. An OSU service error made it 2-1. Another Olree kill and a Buckeye service error made it 3-2. Wauligman and Schmidl exchanged kills to make it 4-3. Another Wauligman kill and a Buckeye error moved the score to 5-3. Two OSU errors and an Olree kill made it 6-5. Two Mercyhurst errors and kills by Trantow and Olree gave Ohio State a 10-5 lead. A VanCise kill cut the margin to 10-6. A Trantow kill and ace serve, a block by Scott Spurlock (Fr., Stow, Ohio) and Wauligman and an Olree kill opened up a 14-6 OSU lead. An OSU error and kills by Spurlock and Olree moved the score to 16-7. A Schmidl kill, an OSU error and a block by Wilson and Laama cut the lead to 16-10. A Trantow kill stopped the run at 16-11, but kills by Wilson and Laama cut the lead to five at 17-12. Kills by Wauligman and Trantow moved the lead to 19-12. Three Buckeye errors and a solo block by Wilson cut the Buckeye lead to three at 19-16. Kills by Mark Peckham (So., London, Ontario) and Trantow made it 21-16, OSU. An OSU error and an Olree kill made it 22-17. VanCise, with a kill, cut the margin to 22-18. Two Spurlock kills, a Spurlock-Wauligman block and a Wauligman kill took the lead to 26-18. A Buckeye error made it 26-19. Wauligman and Laama exchanged kills to put the score at 27-20. Kills by Hamilton and Wauligman set game point at 29-20. A Schmidl kill stopped the game point at 29-21 but a Brett Hamilton (Fr., Rockville, Md.) kill ended the game at 30-21. OSU hit .606 for the game to .211 for the Lakers.

A Buckeye service error started game three but with two Trantow kills and a Mercyhurst error, Ohio State held a 3-1 lead. Two Buckeye errors tied the game at three and a Wilson kill made it 4-3, Mercyhurst. An Olree kill tied the game at four and a Laker error made it 5-4, OSU. A Buckeye error tied the game at five and kills by Olree and Ax tied the game at six. An Olree kill made it 7-6 OSU, but two Buckeye errors and a solo block by Ax put the Lakers ahead, 9-7. An Olree kill and a Mercyhurst error tied the game at nine. A Buckeye error made it 10-9, Lakers. A solo block by Peckham and two Laker errors and a block by Spurlock and Trantow put the Buckeyes ahead, 13-10. Each team scored off an error to make the score 14-11. Kills by Olree and Wauligman put the OSU lead at 16-11. Schmidl and Olree exchanged kills to move the score to 17-12. Another Schmidl kill, a block by Schmidl and Ax and an OSU error cut the lead to two at 17-15. Kills by Wauligman and Olree made it 19-15. A Buckeye error and a Wauligman kill made it 20-16. Trantow and Ax exchanged kills to make the score 21-17. Kills by Trantow and Olree put the lead at 23-17. An OSU error cut the margin to 23-18. Two Olree kills made the lead seven at 25-18. A Schmidl kill cut the margin to 25-19. Kills by Spurlock and Olree made it 27-19. An OSU error made it 27-20. Wauligman and Laama recorded kills to move the score to 28-21. Olree’s 12th kill of the game set match point at 29-21. Olree ripped an ace serve for match point closing the game at 30-21. Ohio State hit .405 for the game to .000 for the Lakers. Olree hit .923 for the game with 12 kills in 13 attempts.

Ohio State hit .515 for the match to .156 for Mercyhurst. The Buckeyes had a 66-26 advantage in kills and had a three to one margin in ace serves. OSU’s Trantow had a match-high two aces in the match. The Buckeyes had a 29-13 margin in digs with Trantow collecting a match-high eight. Ohio State edged Mercyhurst in blocks, six to five. OSU’s Trantow and Spurlock each had three assist blocks for the Buckeyes while Wilson had a solo and two assists for the Lakers. At the setter position, OSU’s Schultz started the match and had 16 assists in the first game. Buckeye Peckham played the last two games and had 38 assists. Samolis for the Lakers had 14 assists in the first two games and John Krugh (Sr., Pittsburgh, Pa.) had five in game three.

Prior to the match, OSU’s Olree and Schultz were honored as the departing seniors on the squad.
