Final Stats

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 12th-ranked Ohio State (17-10 overall, 10-5 Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association) men’s volleyball team handed Indiana-Purdue (8-14, 6-9) a 3-0 (30-18, 30-21, 30-24) loss tonight in St. John Arena. OSU’s Pieter Olree (Sr., Reading, Pa.) had a match-high 18 kills (.696) with Tom Trantow (Sr., River Forest, Ill.) adding 12 (.588) and Ricardo Garcia (So., San Juan, Puerto Rico) nine (.643). The trio of Mitch Dreisbach (Fr., Mishawaka, Ind.) (.176), Nick Belman (Fr., Akron, Ohio) (.267) and Arcangel Ruiz (Jr., Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico) (.625) had six kills each for Indiana-Purdue.

Tied at five-all in game one, a Dreisbach ace and a Ruiz kill gave IPFW a 7-5 lead. A Mastodon error and a Trantow kill tied the game at seven. An ace serve by OSU’s Adam Pedersen (So., Muskego, Wis.) and a Dreisbach kill moved the score to eight-all. Olree and Ruiz exchanged kills to make it nine-all. A Trantow kill and a block by Garcia, Brett Hamilton (Fr., Rockville, Md.) and Olree and a Trantow ace serve gave OSU a 12-9 lead as Indiana-Purdue called time out. An Olree kill completed a four-point Buckeye run at 13-9. A Ruiz kill and an OSU error cut the margin to 13-11. A Mastodon service error and two Olree kills made it 16-11. An IPFW block by Aris Eracleous (Sr., Nicosia, Cyprus) and Josh Sanders (Sr., Racine, Wis.) cut the lead to four at 16-12. Kills by Pedersen and Trantow and two Olree ace serves opened a 20-12 Buckeye lead. An OSU service error cut the lead to 20-13. Olree’s kill made it 21-13. A Belman kill set the score at 21-14. Trantow responded with a kill to make it 22-14. Mastodon kills by Dennis Santiago (Fr., Bayamon, Puerto Rico), Ruiz and Eracleous cut the OSU lead to five at 22-17. A Trantow kill and an IPFW error returned the margin to 24-17. Ruiz and Olree exchanged kills to make the score 25-18. Trantow then fired three consecutive ace serves to make the lead, 28-18. Two Indiana-Purdue errors ended the game at 30-18. Ohio State hit .520 for the game to .471 for the Mastodons.

After seven ties in game two, the score had reached seven-all, as a Trantow kill and two ace serves by Mark Peckham (So., London, Ontario) gave OSU a 10-7 lead. A Dreisbach kill cut the lead to 10-8. The Buckeyes scored the next six points starting with a block by Trantow, Hamilton and Olree, an Olree kill, an IPFW error, Trantow’s fifth ace serve and two more Olree kills to open up a 16-8, OSU lead. Three OSU errors and one by IPFW moved the score to 17-11. Olree, Peckham and Belman each had a kill to move the score to 19-12. Two Buckeye errors advanced the score to 19-14. A Trantow kill and a Buckeye error made it 20-15. Hamilton’s kill made the lead six at 21-15. A Buckeye error and a Sanders kill cut the OSU lead to four at 21-17. A Buckeye block by Trantow and Hamilton, a Mastodon error and an Olree kill made it 24-17, OSU. A Buckeye error cut the margin to 24-18. A Hamilton kill and an OSU error made it 25-19. An Olree kill and a block by Peckham and Pedersen made it 27-19. An OSU error cut the margin to 27-20. Kills by Pedersen and Trantow set game point at 29-20. A Belman kill stopped the game point at 29-21 but a Garcia kill ended the game at 30-21. Ohio State hit .538 for the game to .000 for Indiana-Purdue.

A Trantow kill and two IPFW errors opened game three with OSU taking a 3-0 lead. At 6-3, OSU, A Buckeye service error cut the margin to 6-4. A Garcia kill made it 7-4. A Buckeye error and a Santiago kill closed the margin to one at 7-6. OSU kills by Trantow and Garcia and one from IPFW’s Belman moved the score to 9-7. A Jason Morgan (Fr., Plymouth, Minn.) kill made it, 9-8, OSU. Kills by Hamilton and Olree and a block by Peckham, Hamilton and Olree made it 12-8, Buckeyes. An Eracleous kill cut the lead to 12-9. Kills by Garcia and Olree and a Mastodon error pushed the score to 15-9. A Buckeye error and a Sanders kill cut the margin to 15-11. A Pedersen kill made it a five-point lead at 16-11. Two Buckeye errors and a Morgan kill cut the margin to two at 16-14. Two IPFW errors made it 18-14. A Belman kill and an OSU error returned the lead to two at 18-16. With a four-point run, the Buckeyes took a 22-16 lead with a Trantow kill, an IPFW error, a Pedersen ace and a block by Trantow, Peckham and Hamilton. A Dreisbach kill made it 22-17. The lead went to six (23-17) again with a Hamilton kill. A Morgan kill and an OSU error cut the lead to four at 23-19. A Trantow kill and an OSU error made it 24-20. Santiago’s ace serve cut the margin to three at 24-21. Hamilton’s kill made it 25-21. An exchange of errors moved the score to 26-22. A Mastodon error and a kill by Dreisbach made it 27-23. Olree and Dreisbach each recorded kills to make the score 28-24. A Fort Wayne service error set match point at 29-24. Olree ended the match with a kill for a 30-24 game three win. Ohio State hit .667 for the game to .057 for Indiana-Purdue.

Ohio State hit .573 for the match to .132 for Indiana-Purdue. The OSU hitting percentage is a season-high for the team and ranks as the fifth highest in OSU history. OSU’s Trantow (.588) and Garcia (.643) each set career high hitting percentages. The Buckeyes had a 51-29 advantage in kills. Ohio State had a season-high 11 aces in the match to three for Indiana-Purdue. Trantow’s five ace serves is his career-high, his previous was four in two matches. The Buckeyes had an 18-13 advantage in digs with OSU’s Garcia and Trantow and IPFW’s Dreisbach each recording a match-high four. Ohio State had a nine to two margin in blocks with OSU’s Hamilton collecting a match-high six assist blocks. Peckham, OSU’s setter, had 44 assists in the match while IPFW’s Santiago recorded 25.

Ohio State closes out the regular season against Mercyhurst (6-19, 3-12) at 7 p.m., Saturday, April 13 in St. John Arena. The Lakers lost at Ball State 3-0 (30-23, 30-18, 30-16) Friday night.
