COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 12th-ranked Ohio State (10-4 overall) men’s volleyball team fell to fifth-ranked Penn State (11-2), 0-3 (24-30, 20-30, 21-30) Saturday night at the Golden Dome Classic in Newark, New Jersey. OSU’s Mark Greaves (Jr., Fenton, Mo.) scored a team-high 16.5 points for the Buckeyes with Layne Dreven (Jr., Pittsburgh, Pa.) adding 10. Penn State’s Matt Proper had a match-high 18.5 points with Alex Gutor adding 10.

Tied at 18 in game one back-to-back blocks by Greaves and Dreven gave Ohio State a 20-18 lead. At 21-19, a kill and solo block by Proper tied the game at 21. Penn State took the lead with a Proper-Nate Meerstein block and held the lead to win the game, 30-24. The Nittany Lions hit .240 for the game to .182 for the Buckeyes.

Ohio State opened game two with a Scott Spurlock (Sr., Stow, Ohio) kill and a Nittany Lion error. The Buckeyes held a 16-13 lead when two OSU errors and a Dan O’Dell block tied the game at 16. Tied a 17, Penn State scored the next four points to open a 21-17 lead going on to win the game, 30-20. Penn State hit .200 in the game to .029 for the Buckeyes.

Tied at three in game three, a Buckeye error and a Meerstein-Aaron Smith block put Penn State ahead, 5-3. The Nittany Lions held the lead to take the game, 30-21, winning the match 3-0. Penn State hit .517 in the game to .214 for Ohio State.

Penn State hit .329 in the match to .137 for the Buckeyes. The Nittany Lions had a 44 to 41 margin in kills and served up three aces to zero for Ohio State. The Buckeyes gave up 12 service errors to five for Penn State. Defensively, the Nittany Lions had a 24 to 14 margin in digs with PSU’s O’Dell and Gary Vogel sharing match-high honors with six each. At the net, the Nittany Lions had an 11 to 8.5 advantage in team blocks. OSU’s Dreven produced a match-high six assist blocks with Greaves adding five. PSU setter O’Dell collected 38 assists in the match with OSU’s Daniel Mathews (Fr., Shorewood, Wis.) recording 35. Mathews was named to the Golden Dome Classic Team. Included on the team were Brian Honsberger and Eric Honsberger from Rutgers-Newark, Keith Kowal and Proper of Penn State and Mike Daiga and Matt Zbyszewski of IPFW.

Ohio State continues on the road next week with MIVA conference matches at Loyola Saturday, Feb. 26 at 7 p.m. and at Clarke Sunday, Feb. 27 at 5 p.m.
