COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 12th-ranked Ohio State (9-2 overall, 2-0 Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association) men’s volleyball team had 15.5 team blocks in defeating Ball State (5-5, 0-2), 3-0 (30-19, 30-21, 30-22) Friday night in St. John Arena. OSU’s Scott Spurlock (Sr., Stow, Ohio), Andy Cole (Jr., Glendale, Wis.) and Layne Dreven (Jr., Pittsburgh, Pa.) shared match-high honors with six assist blocks each in the contest while Daniel Mathews (Fr., Shorewood, Wis.) and Mark Greaves (Jr., Fenton, Mo.) contributed five blocks each with a solo and four assists. OSU’s Cole had a match-high 15 points with 12 kills (.611) and six assist blocks for the Buckeyes while Ball State’s Nick Meyer had a team-high 13.5 points with 12 kills (.121), an ace serve and an assist block.

Ohio State held a 6-4 lead in game one when a Cardinal kill by Luis Castera and a Mark Rumschik-Scott Bushong block tied the game at six. The Buckeyes then scored the next eight points and continued to produce a 14-3 run to open a 21-9 lead. Ball State countered with a four-point run to cut the lead to 21-13. A Cardinal error, two ace serves from Greaves and a Daniel Mathews (Fr., Shorewood, Wis.)-Dreven block pushed OSU’s lead back to12 at 25-13. A Spurlock kill set game point at 29-17 but Cardinal kills from Bushong and Patrick Durbin held off the Buckeyes for two game points. Greaves responded with a kill to end the game at 30-19, OSU. The Buckeyes hit .407 in the game to .111 for Ball State.

Tied at two in the second game, three OSU errors and a Meyer kill opened a 6-2 Ball State lead. At 7-3, OSU had a 5-1 scoring run to tie the game at eight. The run included two kills by Cole and two Cole-Spurlock blocks. Tied at nine, a Meyer kill put Ball State ahead, 10-9. A kill by Cole, two by Dreven and a Cardinal error opened a 13-10 Buckeye lead. At 19-16, the Buckeyes scored six consecutive points to take a 25-16 lead. The run included two ace serves from Dan Meske (So., Willow Springs, Ill.), a Greaves kill, a Cole-Dreven block and a Greaves-Dreven block. With OSU leading, 28-11, a block by Spurlock and Mathews and a Mike Wauligman (Sr., Cincinnati, Ohio) kill closed out the game at 30-21, OSU. The Buckeyes hit .625 for the game to .182 for the cardinals.

With Ohio State leading 6-4 in game three, the Buckeye used a Cole kill, a Mathews’ ace serve and three Ball State errors to open an 11-4 lead. Following an OSU service error at 11-5, Ohio State with two Cardinal errors, a kill from Cole and an ace serve from Wauligman had a 15-5 lead. OSU held the lead and with a Stuart Katz (Sr., Port Washington, N.Y.) kill won the game, 30-22, taking the match, 3-0. The Buckeyes hit .281 in the game to .097 for Ball State.

Ohio State hit .422 for the match to .130 for Ball State. The Buckeyes had a 45-41 advantage in kills and a seven to one margin in ace serves. The Cardinals gave up eight service errors to seven for the Buckeyes. Defensively, Ball State had a 25-24 edge in digs with OSU’s Wauligman collecting a match-high eight. At the net, Ohio State held a 15.5 to 3.5 margin in team blocks. Cardinal Evan Berg had a match-high 36 assists to OSU’s Mathews with 35.

Ohio State continues to play at home when they host Quincy (3-3, 0-2), Sunday in St. John Arena at 3 p.m.
