COLUMBUS, Ohio – – The No. 12 Ohio State men’s tennis team (5-5, 0-0 Big Ten) shutout No. 22 Virginia Commonwealth Friday at the Jesse Owens West Tennis Center in Columbus, Ohio. With the win, the Buckeyes extended their home win streak to 21 matches and picked up their first regular season shutout against a Top 25 opponent. OSU improved to 5-5 overall this season and VCU fell to 9-2 overall.

Ohio State captured the crucial doubles point at the Nos. 1 and 3 positions. OSU has won the doubles point in seven-of-10 matches this season. Sophomore Joey Atas (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) and freshman Drew Eberly (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) finished first as they topped Marton Ott and Sebastian Ripoll, 8-4. The junior duo of Scott Green (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) and Ross Wilson (Toledo, Ohio/Toledo St. Francis de Sales), ranked No. 1 in the Feb. 22 ITA Division I doubles poll, clinched the doubles point after they defeated No. 25 Arnaud Leclorec and Daniel Lohff on the No. 1 court. Green and Wilson improved to 14-3 overall this season.

VCU’s tandem of Sergi Arumi and Damien Lacombe came back from a 7-4 deficit and topped the OSU pair of Dennis Mertens (So., Braaschatt, Belgium/Koninkiljk) and Devin Mullings (So., Freeport, Bahamas/Ft. Lauderdale Prepatory), 9-7, at No. 2.

In singles action, Green finished first on the No. 4 court with a 6-2, 6-2 win over VCU’s Ripoll. Atas followed as he put the Buckeyes’ third point on the board after he defeated No. 11 Lecloerec, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 1. Lecloerec is the highest ranked opponent Atas defeated in two seasons as a Buckeye. Sophomore Buckeye Chris Klingemann (Bradenton, Fla./Texas Tech Independent) clinched the match win for Ohio State at the No. 3 position. Klingemann topped No. 91 Arumi, 6-4, 6-1. After Mullings defeated Ott at the No. 2 spot, VCU’s head coach Paul Kostin forfeited the match. The matches on the Nos. 5 and 6 courts were counted as wins by default.

The Buckeyes hit the road Sunday to face No. 42 Alabama for a noon match in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
