Big Rapids, Mich. – The No. 12 Ohio State men’s hockey team lost to Ferris State, 3-2, tonight in Ewigleben Ice Arena. The win gives the Bulldogs a two-game sweep of Ohio State, the first time the Buckeyes have been swept this season and the first time they have lost two games in a row.

With the loss, the Buckeyes drop to 9-6-1 overall and 6-5-1 in CCHA play. The Bulldogs improve to 9-7-1, 7-7-1 in league play.

The Buckeyes ended the first period down, 1-0, as the Bulldogs’ Trevor Large scored a power-play goal on a deflection of a Jeff Legue shot at the 13:52 mark. The Buckeyes spent 6:41 down a man in the stanza, facing two total FSU power plays and allowing five shots in the chances. R.J. Umberger received a five-minute major for slashing and a game disqualification 3:02 into the game, but the Buckeyes did not allow a goal in the five-minute power play. OSU goalie Mike Betz was strong for the Buckeyes in the period, making some great stops on the Bulldogs, especially on the penalty kill. FSU outshot OSU, 11-7, in the stanza.

There was no scoring in the second period. The Buckeyes outshot the Bulldogs, 15-9, in the stanza, as they controlled the play for the majority of the period.

The Bulldogs took a 2-0 lead 4:09 into the third period when Chris Kunitz tallied following a scramble in front of the Buckeye net. The Buckeyes got on the board at the 9:16 mark, as John Toffey scored from in front of the net, assisted by Ryan Smith and Yan Des Gagne. With the Buckeye net empty, Kunitz tallied for the second time in the period, assisted by Rob Collins. With Betz out of the net again (and the teams skating 5-on-5 with a Buckeye in the penalty box), Paul Caponigri tallied off a Mike McCormick faceoff win at 19:45 to draw the Buckeyes within one, 3-2. Ohio State had a few more chances, but could not get the puck past DeCaro.

Ohio State outshot FSU, 37-26, in the game. Betz made 23 saves for the Buckeyes, while FSU goalie John DeCaro stopped 35 OSU shots.

The Buckeyes were 1-for-7 on the power play and gave up two goals to the Bulldogs on six chances.

Following a break for the holidays, the Buckeyes return to action Dec. 29-30 at the Everblades College Hockey Classic in Estero, Fla. The Buckeyes will face Maine at 7:35 p.m. Dec. 29 in first-round action, with Northern Michigan and Cornell facing off in the other contest at 4:05 p.m. The championship and consolation games will be at 4:05 and 7:35 p.m. Dec. 30.
