SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The No. 12 Ohio State men’s hockey team completed a two-game series sweep of Central Collegiate Hockey Association foe Notre Dame, 3-1, Saturday in the Joyce Center. Freshman Domenic Maiani led the way with three assists and points for the Buckeyes. OSU scored one goal in each period for the win.

The win moves Buckeyes’ record to 15-6-3 and 12-3-1 in CCHA play. The Irish fall to 5-13-5 overall and 3-11-4 in the league.

The Buckeyes ended the first period with a 1-0 lead. Rod Pelley (Jr., Kitimat, British Columbia) scored a power-play goal at 8:28, as his shot from the right point got through. Domenic Maiani (Fr., Shelby Township, Mich.) started the play by winning the draw deep in the zone to Sean Collins (Troy, Mich.), who passed to Pelley for the one-timer. OSU outshot the Irish in the period, 13-5.

There was no scoring in the second period until Bryce Anderson (So., Waterloo, Iowa) one-timed a backhand from a nice feed from Tom Fritsche (Fr., Parma, Ohio) from behind the Irish goal. Maiani had the second assist on the goal, as he kept the puck in along the boards near the blueline. OSU had 10 shots in the period, ND had six.

The Irish got on the board with a power-play goal at 11:27 by Josh Sciba. ND pulled goalie Morgan Cey for the extra attacker, but was unable to score. Collins, assisted by Maiani, ended the scoring with an empty-net goal with eight seconds remaining. OSU had seven shots on net in the period, the Irish six.

For the game, OSU outshot ND 30-18. Buckeye junior goalie Dave Caruso (Roswell, Ga.) had 17 saves all 60 minutes and Cey made 17 saves in 59 minutes.

The Buckeyes were 1-for-6 on the power play, the Irish were 1-for-8.

Postgame Notes
Ohio State returns home to open a four-game homestand next weekend. OSU plays host to Michigan at 7:05 p.m. Friday-Saturday, Jan 21-22 in Value City Arena.

Anderson has a goal in each of the last three games. He now has six on the year.

Pelley’s first-period goal was his team-best ninth power-play goal of the season. He is first in the league in power-play goals. He extended his scoring streak to four.

OSU tied the series with Notre Dame, 23-23-6 (according to the OSU record books). OSU has a three-game winning streak against the Irish.

Maiani tied his career high with three assists and points, first set vs. Sacred Heart Nov. 6.

The sweep is OSU’s fifth of the season and its second road sweep (the first was at Ferris State Oct. 15-16).

OSU now is 24-23-6 all-time against Notre Dame, including a 7-1-2 record in the last 10 meetings.

The Irish ended the game with 18 shots; they had 19 in the opener. OSU has held opponents to less than 20 shots four times this season.
