COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 11th-ranked Ohio State (18-7 overall, 11-2 Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association) men’s volleyball team defeated 14th-ranked Lewis (14-13, 8-5), 3-0 (30-23, 34-32, 30-26) Friday night in St. John Arena. OSU’s Mark Greaves (Jr., Fenton, Mo.) had a match-high 24 points against the Flyers with a career-high 24 kills while hitting .556. Matt Mueller posted a team-high 15.5 points for Lewis with 15 kills (.458) and an assist block.

Ohio State scored the first four points of game one off two Lewis errors, a block by Stuart Katz (Sr., Port Washington, N.Y.) and Layne Dreven (Jr., Pittsburgh, Pa.) and a Dreven kill. The Buckeyes held the lead and with a Daniel Mathews (Fr., Shorewood, Wis.) kill, won the game, 30-23. Ohio State hit .485 for the game to .152 for the Flyers.

With game two tied at two each, two kills from Jared Dayton, one from Enrique Escalante and an OSU error put Lewis ahead, 6-2. The Flyers held a 20-16 lead when back-to-back kills from Greaves cut the lead to 20-18. A Dayton kill and a Lewis error made it 21-19, Flyers. Buckeye kills by Mathews and Mike Wauligman (Sr., Cincinnati, Ohio) tied the game at 21. Lewis then out scored the Buckeyes, 5-2 to take a 26-23 lead. A Lewis error, an OSU kill from Greaves and a block from Katz and Dreven tied the game at 26. A Flyer block from Greg Pochopien and Tom Mendoza gave Lewis a 27-26 lead. OSU tied the game at 27 with a Dreven kill and took a 28-27 lead with a Sam Stevens (Jr., Miami, Fla.) ace serve. Pochopien’s kill tied the game at 28. A kill by Greaves put Ohio State ahead, 29-28. Mueller’s kill tied the game at 29. Another Greaves kill put OSU up, 30-29. Mueller again countered with a kill to tie the game at 30. Buckeye Scott Spurlock (Sr., Stow, Ohio) gave OSU a 31-30 lead with a kill. Escalante tied the game at 31 with a kill. A Flyer service error put OSU ahead, 32-31, but a Jeff Soler kill tied the game at 32. With back-to-back kills from Greaves, the Buckeyes won the game, 34-32, on OSU’s fifth game point. Ohio State hit .381 for the game to .333 for Lewis. For the Buckeyes, Greaves had 11 kills with one error in 16 attempts in the game for a .615 hitting percentage.

With game three tied at four, a Mueller kill gave Lewis a 5-4 lead. The Buckeyes responded with a 5-1 run with two Wauligman kills, one from Katz, a Dreven-Wauligman block and a Flyer service error to take a 9-6 lead. The Flyers came right back with a 6-1 run off four OSU errors, an ace serve from Soler and a Pochopien kill to lead 13-11. The Buckeyes responded with four straight points from two Greaves’ kills, a Spurlock kill and a Mathews-Spurlock block to take a 15-13 lead. At 17-15, two kills from Mendoza tied the game at 17. Tied at 19, Buckeye kills from Greaves, Katz and Spurlock and a Spurlock-Mathews block opened a 24-20 OSU lead. At 26-24, a Dreven kill and a Flyer error gave the Buckeyes a 28-24 lead. A Lewis kill from Pochopien, an OSU service error and a Mueller kill made it 29-26 Buckeyes. Greaves closed out the game with his 24th kill of the match to win the game, 30-26. Ohio State hit .643 for the game to .371 for the Flyers.

For the match, Ohio State hit .485 to .293 for the Flyers. The Buckeyes had a 60-54 margin in kills. Each scored recorded one ace serve while OSU gave up 13 service errors to 12 for the Flyers. Defensively, Ohio State had a 31-19 advantage in digs with OSU libero Conor Martin (Fr., Avon Lake, Ohio) recording a match-high nine. At the net, the Buckeyes enjoyed a 9.5 to 5.5 margin in team blocks. Dreven for Ohio State recorded a match-high six assist blocks in the contest. Daniels for Ohio State had 50 assists in the match while Flyer Mendoza posted 43.

Ohio State continues play at home Saturday when they host eighth-ranked Loyola (24-1, 14-0) in St. John Arena at 7 p.m.
