COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 11th-ranked Ohio State (19-7 overall, 12-2 Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association) men’s volleyball team, behind a second straight strong performance by Mark Greaves (Jr., Fenton, Mo.), defeated 8th-ranked Loyola (24-2, 14-1), 3-1 (30-25, 30-26, 24-30, 30-27) Saturday night in St. John Arena. The Buckeye victory stopped the Ramblers’ 21-match winning streak. Greaves posted a career-high 27 points in the match with a career-high 27 kills against the Ramblers. He hit .488 in the contest and added a season-high 14 digs. Loyola’s Corey Kloos had a team-high 20 points with 17 kills (.343), an ace serve, a solo block and two assist blocks.

Loyola broke a three-all tie to take a 6-3 lead off two OSU errors and a Kloos kill. The Ramblers held a 14-10 lead when kills by Scott Spurlock (Sr., Stow, Ohio) and Greaves, a solo block by Daniel Mathews (Fr., Shorewood, Wis.) and a Mathews-Spurlock block tied the game at 14. Two kills by Mathews broke a 22-all tie to give OSU a 24-22 lead. An OSU service error and a Rambler block by Scott Greene and Brian Guntli tied the game at 24. OSU regained the lead with a Mike Wauligman (Sr., Cincinnati, Ohio) kill at 25-24. Layne Dreven’s (Jr., Pittsburgh, Pa.) kill and a Loyola setting error gave the Buckeyes a 27-24 lead. A Rambler kill by Greene cut the lead to 27-25 but back-to-back kills from Wauligman set game point at 29-25. A Rambler hitting error ended the game, 30-25, Ohio State. The Buckeyes hit .417 for the game to .312 for the Ramblers.

Buckeye kills from Dreven and Greaves broke a five-all tie in game two. The Ramblers closed to one at 8-7 with a Kloos kill. OSU kills from Greaves and Spurlock and a Rambler error gave the Buckeyes an 11-7 lead. Ohio State would expand the lead to seven at 26-19 before the Ramblers produced five straight points to close to 26-24. Loyola’s run began with a Greene kill. A solo block by Kloos and a Kloos-Chris Kozlarek block made it 26-22. A Kozlarek kill and then his solo block cut the lead to 26-24. Greaves and Kloos exchanged two kills each to move the score to 28-26. A Spurlock kill set game point at 29-26 and with a Rambler hitting error, the Buckeyes won the game, 30-26. Ohio State hit .267 for the game to .182 for Loyola. OSU’s Greaves produced his second double-figure kill game in as many days with 10 kills with three errors in 13 attempts (.538).

Tied at eight in game three, Rambler kills from Nathan Gustus and Kozlarek gave Loyola a 10-8 lead. A Wauligman kill cut the margin to 10-9. A four-point Rambler scoring run opened up a 14-9 Loyola lead. Kloos contributed two kills while Guntli had one in the run along with a Buckeye error. Loyola took the lead to six at 26-20 and with a Kozlarek kill won the game, 30-24. The Ramblers hit .386 for the game to .235 for Ohio State.

Ohio State broke a two-all tie with an Andy Cole (Jr., Glendale, Wis.) kill. Cole’s ace serve and a kill by Greaves gave Ohio State a 5-2 lead. Kills by Rambler Kozlarek and OSU’s Spurlock made it 6-3. Rambler kills from Kozlarek and James Grunst and a Grunst-Greene block tied the game at six. At seven-all, a Rambler error and OSU kills from Dreven and Wauligman gave the Buckeyes a 10-7 lead. Three consecutive Rambler kills from Kozlarek and an OSU error put Loyola ahead, 11-10. Wauligman, with a kill tied the game at 11. The teams exchanged points to a 15-all tie. OSU took a 16-15 lead with a Cole kill. Grunst tied the game at 16 with a kill. Ohio State opened a two-point lead at 18-16 with a Dreven kill and a Cole-Dreven block. A Kozlarek kill cut the lead to 18-17. Cole’s kill made it 19-17. A Kloos kill and a Rambler error moved the score to 20-18, OSU. Two Buckeye errors tied the game at 20 and a Guntli kill gave the Ramblers a 21-20 lead. Greaves tied the game at 21 with a kill. A Buckeye service error put the Ramblers up, 22-21. A Cole kill and a Rambler error gave OSU a 23-22 lead. Greene’s kill tied the game at 23. Buckeye kills from Cole and Dreven gave OSU a 25-23 lead. Greene cut the lead to 25-23 with a kill. Back-to-back kills from Wauligman gave Ohio State a three-point lead at 27-24. Kills from Loyola’s Greene and OSU’s Greaves moved the score to 28-25. Rambler kills from Gustus and Guntli cut the OSU lead to one at 28-27. Ohio State reached match point with a Cole kill at 29-27. Spurlock’s kill ended the game at 30-27, OSU, for a 3-1 Buckeye victory. In the game, Ohio State hit .477 to Loyola’s .415.

For the match Ohio State hit .352 to Loyola’s .304. The Buckeyes enjoyed a 79-64 margin in kills and had a two to one edge in ace serves. Each squad gave up 12 service errors. Defensively, Ohio State had a 55 to 42 advantage in digs with Greaves recording a match-high 12 for OSU with Wauligman adding 12 and Conor Martin (Fr., Avon Lake, Ohio) 12. At the net, Loyola had an 11 to seven margin in team blocks. Ramblers Grunst and Kozlarek shared match-high honors with six blocks each. Grunst recorded a solo and five assists while Kozlarek collected two solos and four assists. Buckeye setter Mathews had a career-high 70 assists in the match while Loyola’s Guntli recorded 56.

Ohio State’s victory stops a 21-match winning streak for Loyola. The first place Ramblers close out MIVA play next Friday at Ball State needing a victory to capture the outright conference title. Ohio State, a match behind Loyola, hosts Findlay next Friday and closes out regular season play at IPFW Saturday.
