COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 11th-ranked Ohio State (5-1 overall) men’s volleyball team dropped an 0-3 (27-30, 19-30, 26-30) decision to the Findlay Oilers (5-2) Sunday afternoon at Elder High School in Cincinnati, Ohio. The match was played at Elder, the high school of OSU’s Mike Wauligman (Sr., Cincinnati, Ohio) to help promote volleyball in the state of Ohio. Wauligman had a team-high 13.5 points for the Buckeyes in his homecoming with a team-high 11 kills (.474), an ace serve and three assist blocks. Findlay’s C.J. Macias scored a match-high 17 points in the match with a match-high 16 kills (.357) and a solo block. Oiler Jim Dziczkowski added 15 points for Findlay with 14 kills (.435) and an ace serve.

Findlay opened game one with a David Franklin kill and an OSU error for a 2-0 lead. An Andy Cole (Jr., Glendale, Wis.) kill was followed by Franklin score to make it 3-1. Wauligman’s kill cut the lead to 3-2 but a Macias kill and an OSU error made it 5-2. Kills by Wauligman and Macias made it 6-3. OSU made it 6-4 with a Daniel Mathews (Fr., Shorewood, Wis.) kill but a Findlay kill from Josh Enlow and a Buckeye error made it 8-4. A Scott Spurlock (Sr., Stow, Ohio) kill was followed with a Jim Dziczkowski kill and an Oiler service error to make the Findlay lead, 9-6. An Enlow kill and a solo block by Macias opened an 11-6 Findlay lead. An Oiler error and a block by Mark Greaves (Jr., Fenton, Mo.) and Layne Dreven (Jr., Pittsburgh, Pa.) cut the lead to 11-8. Kills by Findlay’s Corey Oliver and OSU’s Greaves made it 12-9. Two Oiler errors cut their lead to 12-11. A Cole kill and two OSU errors made it 14-12 Findlay. An Oiler error, a Dziczkowski kill and a Greaves kill moved the score to 15-14, Oilers. Mathews ace serve tied the game at 15 and Wauligman’s kill gave OSU a 16-15 lead as Findlay called time out. OSU went ahead by two, 17-15, on an Oiler error. Kills by Franklin and Cole made it 18-16, OSU. A Dziczkowski kill and an Oiler error moved the score to 19-17. Franklin and Greaves, with kills, made it 21-18. A Macias kill and a Findlay error made it 22-19. A Buckeye error and two kills from Dziczkowski tied the game at 22. Service errors by both team moved the score to 23-all. A Findlay error put OSU ahead, 24-23, but two kills by Franklin gave Findlay a 25-24 lead. A Spurlock kill tied the game at 25. A kill and block by Chris Keen put Findlay ahead, 27-25. A Findlay error and an Oiler kill from John Breen made it 28-26. Dreven’s kill cut the margin to 28-27, but a Macias kill and an OSU error ended the game at 30-27, Findlay. The Oilers hit .452 for the game to .207 for Ohio State. Findlay opened game two with a Breen kill and a block by Breen and Keen for a 2-0 lead. Spurlock’s kill cut the lead to 2-1. Two kills from Macias, one from Enlow and a Breen ace serve made it 6-1, Findlay. Greaves kill stopped the run but two OSU errors made it 8-2. A Greaves kill and a Dreven-Wauligman block cut the lead to 8-4. Service errors by both teams made it 9-5. An Oiler error and a kill by Oliver moved the score to 10-6. A Buckeye error and a Dziczkowski kill gave Findlay a 12-6 lead. A Buckeye error and a Breen kill moved the score to 14-6. Kills by Greaves and Wauligman were offset by two service errors to advance the score to 16-8, Findlay. An OSU error and a Macias kill made it 18-8. A Greaves kill, a Dreven-Greaves block and a Tim Steadman (Fr., Las Flores, Calif.) ace serve made it 18-11. Three OSU errors and a Macias kill opened the Findlay lead to 21-11. A Cole kill and an OSU error made it 22-12. Two kills from Macias and an Oiler error made it 24-13. Kills by Oliver and Wauligman moved the score to 25-14. A Dziczkowski kill and an Oiler error made it 26-15. A Findlay error and a Wauligman kill made it 26-17. Kills by Dziczkowski and Wauligman moved the score to 27-18. A Dziczkowski kill and service error made it 28-19. Findlay closed out the game with kills from Breen and Enlow to take game two, 30-19. The Oilers hit .591 to .273 for the Buckeyes.

Findlay opened game three with a Macias kill and a service error. A Sam Stevens (Jr., Miami, Fla.) kill made it 2-1, OSU. Oliver’s kill and solo block gave Findlay a 3-2 lead. Kills from Stevens, Macias and Dreven tied the game at four. Errors by both teams made it five-all. A Dziczkowski kill and an Oliver ace serve made it 7-5, Findlay. An Oiler error and a kill from Breen moved the score to 8-6. Findlay took a 12-6 lead with a Breen-Keen block, a Dziczkowski ace serve, a Breen kill and an OSU error. Errors by both teams made it 13-7. A Cole kill and three Oiler errors cut Findlay’s lead to two at 13-11. Kills by Macias and Stevens made it 14-12. An Enlow block and kill made it 16-12. Wauligman’s kill and a Buckeye error made it 17-13. Errors by both team moved the score to 18-14. A Wauligman-Dreven block and a Dziczkowski kill made it 19-15. Kills by Dreven and Dziczkowski moved the score to 20-16. An Oiler error and a Macias kill made it 21-17. Wauligman’s kill and a Buckeye error moved the score to 22-18. Findlay kills from Enlow and Macias and two Oiler service errors made it 24-20, Findlay. Two Oiler errors and a kill from Dziczkowski set the score at 25-22. An OSU error and a Mathew’s kill made it 26-23. Breen’s kill and a Wauligman-Dreven block moved the score to 27-24. An Oiler error and a Dziczkowski kill made it 28-25. Wauligman’s kill cut the lead to two at 28-26, but a Macias kill and Breen’s ace serve off the net ended the game at 30-26, Findlay. The Oilers hit .231 for the game to .120 for Ohio State.

Findlay hit .391 for the match to .197 for the Buckeyes. The Oilers had a 53-34 margin in kills and a four to three advantage in ace serves. Findlay gave up 15 service errors to 10 for Ohio State. Defensively, the Oilers had a 19-15 edge in digs with OSU’s Mathews and Oiler Dan Plotts recording a match-high five each. At the net, Findlay edged Ohio State, six to five in team blocks. OSU’s Dreven recorded a match-high five assist blocks in the match. Findlay’s Keen served up a match-high 44 assists while OSU’s Mathews had 28.

Ohio State hit the road next week with matches at St. Francis (Pa.) and Penn State. OSU plays St. Francis Friday, Jan. 28, 7 p.m., and faces seventh-ranked Penn State Saturday, Jan. 29 in a match that will be carried by CSTV at 7 p.m.
