COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 11th-ranked Ohio State (22-7 overall) men’s volleyball team advanced to the MIVA Tournament semifinals with a 3-1 (30-19, 26-30, 30-23, 30-27) win over Quincy (9-17) Saturday night in a tournament quarterfinal match played in St. John Arena. OSU’s Mark Greaves (Jr., Fenton, Mo.) had a match-high 22 points and Scott Spurlock (Sr., Stow, Ohio) contributed a career-high 20 points for the Buckeyes. Greaves had a match-high 20 kills (.342) with an ace serve and two assists blocks. Spurlock equaled his career-high of 15 kills (.636), adding two ace serves, a solo block and four assist blocks in the contest. Quincy’s Branden Been posted a team-high 16 points for the Hawks with Jon Moreno adding 14.5. Been had a team-high 14 kills (.500) and four assist blocks. Moreno contributed 13 kills (.296) and three assist blocks.

From a three-all tie, a kill by Spurlock followed by his ace serve put OSU ahead, 5-3, in game one. At 5-4, a Mike Wauligman (Sr., Cincinnati, Ohio) kill and two Quincy errors gave OSU an 8-4 lead. At 15-12, OSU scored the next five points to open a 20-12 lead. The run began with a Stuart Katz (Sr., Port Washington, N.Y.)-Layne Dreven (Jr., Pittsburgh, Pa.) block. Greaves scored with a kill and a second Katz-Dreven block made it 18-12. A Dreven-Greaves block followed and with a Quincy error gave OSU a 20-12 lead. The Buckeyes closed out the game with a Katz kill for a 30-19 win. OSU hit .500 for the game to .192 for the Hawks.

In game two, Ohio State held a slim lead at 14-13 before a Ryan Ehnert kill, an OSU error and a Hawk block by Ed Ryan and Been gave Quincy a 16-14 lead. The Hawks held the lead and with a John Markendorf kill won the game, 30-26. Quincy hit .306 in the game to .293 for OSU. Quincy took a 1-0 lead off an OSU error in game three. A Greaves kill, a Spurlock-Greaves block and two Hawk errors opened a 4-1 Ohio State lead. At 20-17, a Katz kill and a Katz-Spurlock block put the Buckeyes ahead by five at 22-17. Quincy, off two OSU errors, closed to 22-19 but two Spurlock kills, a Katz ace serve and two Hawk errors opened a 27-19 OSU lead. At 29-20, Quincy held off three match points with an OSU error, a kill by Niels Pedersen and a solo block by Mike Mocchi to cut the Buckeye lead to 29-23. A kill from Layne Dreven (Jr., Pittsburgh, Pa.) ended the game at 30-23 for OSU. The Buckeyes hit .351 for the game to .303 for Quincy.

The Hawks again took a 1-0 lead off a Buckeye error in game four. The Buckeyes with two kills from Greaves, an ace serve from Dreven and a Hawk error took a 4-1 lead. After an OSU error, kills by Greaves and Wauligman gave the Buckeyes a 6-2 lead. Hawk kills from Markendorf and Been cut the lead to 6-4. Kills from Katz and Greaves and a Spurlock-Mathews block made it 9-4, OSU. Quincy cut the lead to three at 14-11 before a Hawk error and kills from Wauligman and Greaves took the lead to 17-11. Quincy then outscored the Buckeyes, 7-2, to cut the lead to 19-18. A Dreven kill and a Hawk error put OSU ahead, 21-18. At 26-22, a Been kill and a Ehnert ace serve cut the lead to 26-24. Two Hawk errors and a Brett Versen (So., Centerville, Ohio) kill gave Ohio State match point at 29-24. Back-to-back Hawk kills by Moreno and an OSU error stopped three match points to trim the lead to 29-27. Quincy’s next serve was into the net to end the game at 30-27. Ohio State hit .407 in the game to .286 for the Hawks.

For the match, Ohio State hit .374 to Quincy’s .277. The Buckeyes had a 69-60 advantage in kills and had a seven to five edge in ace serves. Quincy gave up 12 service errors to 10 for OSU. Defensively, Ohio State had a 42-34 margin in digs with Wauligman recorded a match-high 10 for the Buckeyes. At the net, Quincy posted an 11 to nine advantage in team blocks. Markendorf had a match-high six assist blocks for Quincy while Spurlock had a team-high five total blocks (1 solo, four assists) for Ohio State. Buckeye setter Mathews had a match-high 58 assists while Pedersen posted 51 assists for Quincy.

No. 2 seed Ohio State advances to the MIVA Tournament semifinals hosted by Loyola-Chicago and will play No. 3 seed Ball State (17-14) Friday evening at Loyola. Ball State defeated No. 6 seed Mercyhurst, 3-1 (26-30, 31-29, 30-18, 30-22) tonight to advance.
