COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 11 Ohio State Buckeyes (9-2 overall, 2-2 in Big Ten) are at the midpoint of the Big Ten season. On Sunday, OSU travels to University Park, Pa., to face No. 4 Penn State. It will be the first of two meetings between the two schools this seaason. %^$

%^$A Record Start
%^$OSU’s 8-1 start tied the school mark for best start set in 1974 and 1994. The Buckeyes set a new school record by opening the season with seven consecutive wins. The old record of 6-0 was set both in 1974 and 1994.%^$

%^$This Week’s Ranking
%^$In the Sept. 21, STX/NFHCA Division 1 National Coaches poll, the Ohio State reached its highest ranking in school history at No. 5. In this week’s poll, the Buckeyes are No. 11. %^$

%^$Offensive Leaders
%^$Offensively, the Buckeyes have been paced by consistent scoring from five different players. Katie Hobson leads the team with 10 goals and 24 points. She is also tied for second on the team lead with four assists. Deanna Menichini is second the team with 17 points (seven goals and three assists). Jayne Landis is chipping in with six goals and four assists for 16 points. Marije van Nouhuys has 13 points off five goals and three assists. Diana Kuser is fifth on the team with 11 points and is tied with Hobson and Landis for the assist lead. %^$

%^$Defensive Leaders
%^$The Ohio State defense is allowing its opponents an average of 1.73 goals per game. Leading the way is co-captain Aubrey Stock with her team high three defensive saves. The goaltending combination of Gillian Batey and Allison Blanton have combined for two shutouts and 48 saves. %^$

%^$Scouting the Lady Lions
%^$The No. 4 Penn State Lady Lions enter this week with a 10-2 overall and 3-1 Big Ten record. On Friday, the Lady Lions travel to Newark, Del., to face James Madison. PSU’s only losses this season have come against No. 6 Connecticut and No. 10 Iowa. Last weekend, the Lady Lions defeated Michigan State 5-0, and Michigan, 2-1. Offensively, the squad is led by Tracey Larson. She has a team high 15 points off five goals and 15 assists. Traci Anselmo leads the Lady Lions with 10 goals. In goal, Heidi Leuchete leads the team with 42 saves and a 0.60 goals against average. The Lady Lions head coach is Char Morett. She is in her 13th year at the helm. %^$

%^$OSU vs. PSU All-Time
%^$Penn State has a 20-4-2 lead in the all-time series between the two schools. Last year, OSU won the meeting in Columbus 1-0, and lost the game in University Park, 2-0. %^$

%^$Hosting the Big Ten Tourney
%^$The Ohio State University will have the privilege of hosting the 1999 Big Ten Tournament, Nov. 5-7 at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center Turf Field. All six teams in the conference are invited with the winning team receiving an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Seeding will be determined by the regular season’s final standings. The Buckeyes should have a definite advantage after going 7-1 at home last year. %^$

%^$The Head Coach
%^$Anne Wilkinson enters her fourth year as the Ohio State head coach. She currently has a 45-26 (.634) record at OSU and a 124-110-8 (.529) career record. Since her arrival in Columbus, OSU has established itself as a consistent winner in the Big Ten Conference and in the classroom. Last season, her team finished third in the conference and took home two all-conference awards. Four Buckeyes were also named to the regional All-American team. Academically, the Buckeyes had three student-athletes named to the NFHCA Division I National Academic Squad and four student-athletes named academic all-Big Ten.%^$

%^$The Captains
%^$Senior Jayne Landis and junior Aubrey Stock are this season’s co-captains. Landis, a native of Telford, Pa., led the team with nine goals in 1998. Stock, a native of Seven Valleys, Pa., tied for the team lead with three defensive saves last season.%^$
