COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 11 Ohio State Buckeyes (10-4 overall, 3-4 in the Big Ten) defeated the Northwestern Wildcats, 3-2 in an overtime thriller at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center.
The Wildcats took an early 1-0 lead less then five minutes into the game when Kristy Whitman scored on a penalty corner. Less than a minute later, Ohio State’s Haley Fox (Jr., Foxboro, Mass.) found herself in the perfect place at the right time. A ball deflected off NU goalkeeper Kendra Mesa in front of Fox. An alert Fox quickly fired the ball into the back of the net to tie the game at one.
With 19:52 remaining in the game, OSU took the lead when Fox redirected a shot by Deanna Menichini (Newtown Square, Pa.) for her second goal of the afternoon and her fourth goal of the season. But Northwestern refused to go away quietly. With just 1:11 remaining in the game, Amy Haase found an open Lindsay Wright to tie the game at two and send the contest into the extra period. The assist was the second of the game for Haase.
Just 1:02 into the overtime period, Marije van Nouhuys (So., New Lyceum, Netherlands) converted a penalty corner off a pass from Diana Kuser (So., Barto, Pa.) to give OSU a 3-2 win.
On Sunday, Oct. 24, the Buckeyes play host to Penn State at noon.
