BOSTON – The 10th-ranked Ohio State women’s hockey team had a four-goal third period and outshot Northeastern a total of 55-24 en route to a 6-2 victory over the Huskies Saturday at Matthews Arena. The 55 shots on goal is a record for the Buckeyes, topping the last mark of 54 set March 3, 2001 vs. Wayne State. With the win, OSU remains a perfect 4-0-0 overall (2-0-0 WCHA). NU falls to 1-2-0 (1-0-0 Hockey East).
The Buckeyes took an early 1-0 lead at 3:58 in the first period when sophomore Mallory Peckels (Minocqua, Wis./Madison Capitals) backhanded the puck past NU goaltender Marisa Hourihan for her first goal of the season. Senior Jana Harrigan (Burlington, Ontario/Mississauga Jr. Chiefs) had her third assist of the season on the goal and freshman Morgan Marziali (St. Mary’s, Ontario/London Devilettes) collected her first. Ohio State held their lead into the first intermission with a 17-8 edge in shots on goal.
The Huskies tied the game at 1-1 1:34 into the second period when Nikki Petrich scored while on the power play. The goal ended junior goaltender Erika Vanderveer’s (Bradford, Ontario/Mississauga Jr. Chiefs) shutout streak at 101:19. It also was the first power play goal the Buckeyes allowed this season.
Northeastern then took the lead at the halfway mark of the period when Petrich scored her second power play goal of the game. NU’s 2-1 lead marked the first time this season an opponent held a lead over the Buckeyes. However, Ohio State came roaring back and scored a power play goal of its own at 14:51 to knot the game at 2-2. Junior Katie Maroney (La Porte, Ind./Culver Academy) tucked in the rebound of classmate Amber Bowman (Innisfil, Ontario/Beatrice Jr. Aeros) for her second goal of the year. It was the third assist for Bowman. The score remained tied at the end of two periods with OSU continuing to out-shoot the Huskies, 36-19.
Ohio State regained the lead in the third period when Harrigan scored her first goal of the season with a single assist by Peckels, also her first, at 8:32. Freshman defenseman Kelly Cahill (Farmington Hills, Mich./Honeybaked) then increased the score to 4-2 at 11:25 when she stripped the puck away from an NU player and scored a shorthanded goal on a breakaway. The goal moved Cahill’s point streak to four games.
Northeastern pulled Hourihan for the majority of the last three minutes of the game, and the Buckeyes took advantage by scoring two empty net goals to put the game out of reach with a final score of 6-2. Sophomore Erin Keys (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Durham) notched her first goal of the season on a pass by classmate Jody Heywood (Regina, Saskatchewan/Regina Cougars). Freshman Megan Hostasek (Kimberley, British Columbia/Warner School) scored the other empty netter, unassisted, at 18:46 for her first goal in an OSU sweater.
The game was a special teams showdown as OSU went 1-for-6 on the power play, while NU was 2-for-6. Vanderveer stopped 20 of 22 shots to improve to 4-0-0. Hourihan had 49 saves but moved to 1-1-0.
The Buckeyes continue their road stint, traveling next to Minnesota-Duluth to play the No. 3 Bulldogs in a WCHA series Oct. 21-22. Games start at 8:07 p.m. (ET) both Friday and Saturday.
