With the final minute of regulation approaching, OSU took a timeout. Senior goaltender Erika Vanderveer (Bradford, Ontario/Mississauga Jr. Chiefs) was pulled with :50 left for an extra attacker. With skaters piled around the net, Chesson blasted a shot from the top of the slot that went through traffic and past MSU goaltender Britni Kehler, top shelf with :08 remaining to tie the score at 3-all and send the game into overtime.
In the extra session, the Buckeyes were able to hold the puck in the Maverick zone for the majority of the time. She was assisted by Bowman and junior forward Jodi Heywood (Regina, Saskatchewan/Regina Cougars), who opened the scoring for the Buckeyes in the closing minutes of the second period.
Minnesota State scored at 15:31 of the second period to give itself a 3-0 lead when Jodi Helminen capitalized on a 2-on-1 and flicked the puck past Vanderveer off a pass from Lindsay Macy. Heywood scored at 18:01 to erase the shutout and move the score to 3-1 heading into the second intermission. While charging toward the net, Heywood jammed the puck in, with assists by Shelby Aldous (LaSalle, Ontario/Windsor Wildcats) and Klassen to begin the Ohio State rally.
The Mavericks took a 2-0 lead into the first intermission on two breakaway goals.
