COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 10 Ohio State women’s soccer team (0-2,0-0 Big Ten) suffered a 2-1 defeat in overtime at the hands of the Washington Huskies Sunday in the final game of the 2004 Husky/Nike Invitational in Seattle, Wash.
The Buckeyes lost the match despite out-shooting the Huskies 19-8 and holding a 9-4 advantage in the shots in goal department. For the second-consecutive contest, freshman Lara Dickenmann (Kries, Switzerland) led the Buckeyes in shots with five, including three on goal. The Buckeyes also held a decisive edge in corner kicks, 10-4.
Both teams were scoreless for the first 53 minutes of the game until Washington’s Kelley Schweigert received a pass from teammate Nikki Gamble and beat OSU goalkeeper Jen Heaney (Cincinnati, Ohio) for a 1-0 lead.
The Buckeyes would answer and tie the game, 1-1, in the 89th minute of play when junior Danielle Dietrich (Cincinnati, Ohio) rebounded a Kathy Fulk (Dublin, Ohio) shot and blasted it past Washington goalkeeper Kelsey Rasmussen for her first goal of the season. Fulk was credited with an assist on the play.
Washington tallied the deciding score in overtime when Kim Taylor redirected a Kelley Schweigert corner kick past Heaney ending play at 98:11. Heaney finished the game with two saves.
Overall, Ohio State assistant coach John Lipsitz was pleased by his team’s performance and how well they played.
“After a heartbreaking loss to Portland on Friday our team came out and played their hearts out,” Lipsitz said. “I am proud of this squad and how they played all weekend. I think we have proven ourselves as a team that is going to be very successful this year. It is very disheartening to dominate the game but come up empty handed. I give all the credit to Washington, they took what we gave them and beat us.” The Buckeyes return to the pitch at 7:30 p.m., Thursday at Jesse Owens Stadium for their home-opener against Xavier.
