COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 10 Ohio State men’s hockey team scored four power-play goals to down No. 3-ranked Michigan, 4-1, Friday in front of a season-high 14,777 fans in Value City Arena. Dan Knapp, Matt Beaudoin, Rod Pelley and Kyle Hood scored for the Buckeyes, as the squad was 4-for-7 with the man advantage.
The teams will end the two-game series at 7:05 p.m. Saturday in Value City Arena. The game, which is sold out, will be televised live on CSTV: College Sports Television.
The win improves the Buckeyes’ record to 16-6-3 on the year. The team is in second place in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association with a 13-3-1 and now is three points behind the first-place Wolverines in the league standings. U-M, which saw its 12-game CCHA winning streak end, drops to 18-6-1 on the year and now is 15-2 in the conference.
The Buckeyes got on the board first, as Knapp (Jr., Rochester, Mich.) scored, assisted by Sean Collins and Bryce Anderson (So., Waterloo, Iowa) at 7:07. The Wolverines tied the game with a power-play goal of their own at 12:20. With U-M on the power play another penalty was called on OSU; U-M goalie Al Montoya left the ice for the extra attacker to make it a 6-on-4 advantage and Milan Gajic’s shot from in close got in to knot the score at 1. Beaudoin (So., Rock Forest, Quebec) then responded with a power-play goal of his own to give OSU a lead it would not relinquish. Beaudoin took a short pass from Tom Fritsche (Fr., Parma, Ohio) and beat Montoya from the left circle with OSU on a 5-on-3 advantage. Hood (Fr., Osoyoos, British Columbia) also assisted on the goal, as he kept the puck in at the blue line and got it to Fritsche. The Buckeyes outshot the Wolverines in the period, 13-9, and were 2-for-3 on the power play. U-M was 1-for-4 with the man advantage. There was no scoring in the second, as the Wolverines put eight shots on net and the Buckeyes had seven. OSU was unable to score on one power-play chance and stopped U-M on three chances.
The Buckeyes made the score 3-1 just 1:37 into the third period, when Pelley (Jr., Kitimat, British Columbia) scored his team and league-best 10th power-play goal of the season, as his shot from the right point got through. Domenic Maiani (Fr., Shelby Township, Mich.) and Collins assisted on the goal. Hood put the game out of reach at 4-1 with his second goal of the season, as he scored from the side of a net off a pass from Kenny Bernard (So., Sarnia, Ontario). Beaudoin had the second assist on the goal. The Buckeyes were outshot in the period, 12-10. OSU converted two of their three power-play chances in the period and stopped the Wolverines on two chances.
In the game, Ohio State converted 4-of-7 power-play chances and held the Wolverines scoreless on 8-of-9 chances.
Ohio State outshot the Wolverines, 30-29. Buckeye junior goalie Dave Caruso (Roswell, Ga.) made 28 saves in all 60 minutes. Montoya had 26 saves in 59:50 in net.
