COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s ice hockey team was defeated by No. 1 Minnesota, 4-2, Saturday night at the OSU Ice Rink in Columbus, Ohio. Senior forward Jeni Creary leads the squad with two goals, while four additional Buckeyes record points.
With the loss, Ohio State falls to 12-11-1 overall and 9-11-0 in the WCHA. Minnesota improves to 21-1-2 overall and 16-0-2 in the WCHA.
Minnesota jumped out to take a 2-1 lead in the first period. Kelly Stephens scored a power-play goal to get the Golden Gophers on the scoreboard at 14:53. The Golden Gophers took a 2-0 lead just over a minute later when Krissy Wendel scored a shorthanded goal. Ohio State capitalized on a 5-on-3 power-play opportunity at 16:53 to cut UM’s lead to one. OSU’s Jeni Creary (Shell Lake, Saskatchewan) skated in from the point to score her 16th goal of the season, assisted by sophomore defensemen Amber Bowman (Innisfil, Ontario) and Tessa Bonhomme (Sudbury, Ontario). Minnesota outshot OSU 12 to six in the first period.
Both teams skated to a scoreless second period. The Buckeyes tallied seven shots to Minnesota’s 12 in the stanza. Ohio State had one power-play opportunities but was unable to score.
Ohio State held Minnesota to a one goal game until the final two minutes of the game. Minnesota’s Natalie Darwitz scored Minnesota’s third goal of the game at 18:52. Ohio State called a timeout and pulled its goalie with 1:06 remaining. The Buckeyes came within one goal as they capitalized on the extra-man advantage at 19:50. Creary scored her second goal of the game on a 6-on-4 opportunity. Minnesota secured its victory with an empty-net goal at 19:55. Jana Harrigan (Burlington, Ontario) and Meaghan Mulvaney (Sylvania, Ohio) assisted on the goal. UM outshot OSU 12 to five in the final stanza.
Ohio State goalie Erika Vanderveer (So., Bradford, Ontario) recorded 32 saves in 5:54 minutes of action. Minnesota’s goalie Brenda Reinen posted 16 saves and remains undefeated with a 7-0 record this season.
The Golden Gophers outshot the Buckeyes 36-18. Ohio State held Minnesota scoreless on three of four power-play chance. The Buckeyes were 2-for-5 on the power-play.
Ohio State hits the road to take on St. Cloud State for the beginning of an eight-game road stretch Jan. 28-29 in St. Cloud, Minn.
With her one assist, Jana Harrigan extended her point streak to eight games this season. During her stretch Harrigan has posted four goals and 10 assists for 14 points.
Jeni Creary’s two-goal game, marked the fourth contest this season she has posted two goals and her ninth multiple-point game. Creary contiues to lead the team with 17 goals this season, including 10 power-play goals.
