COLUMBUS, Ohio – Buckeyes Saskia Mueller and Yesenia Luces each had a goal and two assists, leading the No. 10 Ohio State field hockey team to a 3-2 victory over Northwestern Saturday in Evanston, Ill. The win, OSU’s ninth in a row, improves the Buckeyes’ record to 10-2 on the year, including a perfect 3-0 mark in Big Ten play. The Wildcats fall to 6-4 and 0-2 in the conference.

“We came into Northwestern knowing we were going to have to fight for a win. They competed until the last second of the game,” Buckeye head coach Anne Wilkinson said. “I’m pleased with the composure of our players throughout the game. We moved the ball well, finished our opportunities on offense and executed on our corners.”

There was no scoring in the first half. Ohio State outshot Northwestern, 10-5, but NU goalie Sherri-Anne Nyberg had five saves to keep the Buckeyes off the scoreboard. OSU goalie Lindsay Williams (Sr., Harrisburg, Pa.) had one save in the half.

In the second half, the Buckeyes scored three goals off penalty corners to secure the win. Curlyne Wynn (Jr., Trincity, Trinidad and Tobago) got the Buckeyes on the board early in the half, as she tallied at 37:15, set up by Luces (So., Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago) and Mueller (Jr., Zuerich, Switzerland). Northwestern tied the game at 1-all on Noreen Stewart’s goal at 46:27 off a penalty corner.

Luces scored at 52:02 to put OSU ahead for good, set up by Mueller. Mueller then scored a goal of her own with five minutes remaining, assisted by Luces to give OSU a 3-1 edge. The Wildcats’ Jill Putnam scored at 67:20 to draw NU within a goal, but OSU held strong and pulled out the one-goal win.

In the second half, Ohio State outshot Northwestern, 16-5, and had 11 penalty corners to the Wildcats’ three.

For the game, the Buckeyes outshot the Wildcats, 26-10, and had 18 penalty corners to NU’s six. Buckeye goalie Williams played all 70 minutes and recorded two saves. NU’s Nyberg had 12 saves in the contest.

The Buckeye nine-game winning streak marks their longest since 1976 when the Buckeyes reeled off 10 in a row. It is the first time they have opened Big Ten play 3-0 since the 2001 team won its first four conference games.

The Buckeyes return to action with a game at Miami at 3 p.m. Wednesday in Oxford, Ohio.
