COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 1-seeded Ohio State field hockey team was defeated by No. 5 Iowa, 2-0, Saturday in the first semifinal game of the Big Ten tournament in Ann Arbor, Mich. It is just the third loss for the Buckeyes this season, who move to 14-3 overall, and only the second time OSU has been held scoreless. Iowa improves to 11-8.
The teams played to a scoreless first half, with Ohio State holding a 4-1 advantage in both shots and penalty corners.
The Hawkeyes scored twice in the opening minutes of the second half. Caitlin McCurdy opened the scoring at 43:24 when she knocked in the ball in from the lower left corner on a pass from Kelly Hondros.
Lauren Pfeiffer increased the Iowa lead to 2-0 at 49:18 on a penalty stroke.
The Buckeyes added another four shots in the half, but were unable to get anything past UI goalkeeper Lissa Munley, who finished the game with a total of three saves.
Overall, OSU outshot the Hawkeyes 8-6 with a 10-1 margin in penalty corners. It was the third-consecutive game the Buckeyes have held their opponent to just one penalty stroke.
Seniors Curlyne Wynn (Trincity, Trinidad and Tobago/North Eastern College) and Saskia Mueller (Zuerich, Switzerland/Gymnasium Unterstrass) along with sophomore Linda Haussener (Baden, Switzerland/Kantonsschule Baden) led the Buckeyes with two shots apiece.
Freshman keeper Lindsay Quintiliani (Mountain Top, Pa./Crestwood) made three saves in the game, but picked up the loss to move to 14-3 this season.
Ohio State next awaits the announcement of the 2006 NCAA Tournament bracket. The selections will be announced Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. on CSTV.
