WEST POINT, N.Y. – The No. 1 Ohio State men’s gymnastics team finished first with a score of 220.9 at the Session I qualifier at the 2005 NCAA Men’s Gymnastics Championships at the Holleder Center in West Point, N.Y. With the win, the Buckeyes advance to the team and all-around finals at 7 p.m. EDT where the Top 3 teams from each session will vie for the 2005 title. OSU will be joined by Michigan (220.375) and Penn State (220.350) from the first session. Session II will take place at 7 p.m. EDT Thursday night. Log on to www.ncaasports.com for complete results.

The Buckeyes started out strong on vault, posting a 36.850 to place first in the opening rotation. Senior co-captain Randy Monahan (Elizabethtown, Pa./Central Pa., Academy of Gym.) led the way for Ohio State, tallying a 9.3 for a tie for 10th on the apparatus and co-captain Cody Trobaugh (Sr., Dallas, Texas/Houston Gym.) followed with a 9.2 (t-12th). OSU dropped to third after the second rotation on parallel bars, scoring a 36.85. Freshman DJ Bucher’s (Mason, Ohio/Queen City Gym.) 9.6 on parallel bars placed him second overall. In the third rotation the Buckeyes competed on high bar and compiled a 38.00 to climb to second place. A trio of Buckeyes rounded out the Top 3 with Willie Ito (So., Huntington Beach, Calif./South Coast Gym.) notching a 9.8 for first. Ronald Ferris (Jr., Austintown, Ohio/Ohio Gym. Institute) and Monahan recorded a 9.65 and a 9.6 to finish second and third, respectively. After a bye in the fourth rotation and trailing Stanford by only .15 points halfway through the meet, Ohio State resumed competition on floor where it posted a 37.575 to remain in second place. Monahan scored a 9.5 to lead all Buckeye gymnasts with a second-place finish. Trobaugh (9.425) and Grant Osborne (So., Fort Collins, Colo./USOTC) (9.4) concluded the event tied for fifth and tied for seventh, respectively. OSU regained the lead after the sixth rotation on pommel horse, tallying a 35.8. Ito’s score of 9.375 led OSU and placed him third overall. Ohio State concluded the afternoon posting a 36.875 on rings. Monahan led the Buckeyes on the event, recording a 9.6 for fourth place.

The Buckeyes were first on high bar (38.0) and tied for first on parallel bars (36.85), while also placing second on floor (37.575).
