Nick Demaline and Zack Bazile, the two current Buckeyes, are rising seniors and they both competed at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships two weeks ago. Demaline made the most of his first-career trip to the NCAA outdoor championships with a third-place showing in the shot put with a heave of 20.08m (65-10.50). The finish made him the first thrower to earn First Team All-America honors in the shot since JC Murasky did so in 2015.
Speaking of Murasky, the former Buckeye will be tossing the shot alongside Demaline. Murasky, a two-time All-American in the shot put, has been training at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif., since October of last year. During his time wearing the Scarlet and Gray, Murasky won 18 shot put titles and he currently sits third all-time in program history in three events: indoor shot put (20.19m), outdoor shot put (20.21m) and the discus throw (53.59m).
Bazile had a rough go of it at the NCAA meet, but he still ended 2017 on a solid note. The Montvale, N.J., native grabbed a pair of silvers (long and triple jump) at the Big Ten Championships in mid-May to help Ohio State earn a second-place team finish at the conference meet, its highest since 2009.
2016 Rio Olympian Michael Hartfield will be competing alongside Bazile in the long jump on Sunday. Hartfield owns the best outdoor long jump in Ohio State history when he leaped 8.15m (26-9.00) in 2013 at the Texas Relays. Hartfield also owns three other top-five marks in program history between the indoor and outdoor triple and long jumps.
Set to be enshrined into the 2017 Ohio State Athletics Hall of Fame class, Christina Manning will be competing in the 100m hurdles. Manning was an 11-time All-American, 10-time Big Ten champion, and two-time national champion. A native of Waldorf, Md., Manning still owns the ninth-fastest 60m hurdle time (7.91) and 10th-fastest 100m hurdle time (12.68) in NCAA history, and she sits atop the Ohio State record books in the 60m dash (7.23), 60m hurdles (7.91), 100m hurdles (12.68) and the 4x100m relay (43.70).
Cory Leslie, a mid-distance runner from 2009-12, will be giving it a go in the 1,500m run. The former Buckeye stud owns five school records that have yet to be broken, including three that he set during his senior year: 800m run (indoor/1:48.11), mile run (indoor/3:56.85) and the distance medley relay (indoor/9:31.17). His best time of 3:39.00 in the 1,500m run during his collegiate days ranks No. 2 in program history.
The final three Buckeyes in action just recently ended their racing careers for Ohio State. Champ Page (400m dash), Rachel Weber (800m run) and Deshawn Marshall (200m dash) will be competing in their respective events. Page owns the fifth-fastest 400m outdoor dash time in program history, a 45.54 he ran at the NCAA East Preliminaries to qualify for the NCAA Championships. Weber set the school record twice in 2017 in the 800m run, the first coming at the Big Ten Championships (2:03.90) and then the final coming at the NCAA East Preliminaries (2:02.67). Marshall’s career-best time of 20.32 in the 200m dash is the third-fastest in program history. Marshall was also a huge proponent in helping the 4x100m relay set the school record at the NCAA Championships with a readout of 38.92 to finish ninth.
In addition to the USATF meet, SoSo Walker will be competing in the 400m dash Thursday and Friday (June 22-23) at the Jamaican National trials. Walker owns three school records, all of which she set during her junior season: 400m dash (outdoors/51.53), 4x400m relay (outdoors/3:28.37) and the sprint medley relay (outdoors/3:47.87).
