Nationwide Tour stops at Scarlet Course for fourth-annual tournament

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Nationwide Tour is making its annual stop at The Ohio State University Golf Club’s Scarlet Course this week with the fourth installment of the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Invitational. Tournament action begins at 7 a.m. Thursday morning and continues through the final round Sunday.

Among the 144 golfers hitting the links are three with Ohio State ties including Brian Kelly, the OSU Golf Club’s head professional, who received a sponsor’s exemption. He will tee off of No. 1 at 1:50 p.m.

Just before him on the same tee at 1:40 p.m. will be former Buckeye Zach Sebert (2008-09), who also earned an exemption. Ryan Armour, who played for Ohio State from 1995-98 and has experience on both the Nationwide and PGA Tours, will begin his first round early with a 7:50 a.m. tee time off No. 1.

Each of the top 10 players on the Nationwide Tour money list will compete on Scarlet and the NCHI also invited 11 All-America selections from the 2009-10 college golf season, creating a tournament field that spans the best in both amateur and professional golf.

A few notes about the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Invitational and the Nationwide Tour:

NATIONWIDE’S HOMETOWN HOSTS TOUR FOR FOURTH YEAR: The 2010 edition of the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Invitational marks the tournament’s fourth year. In those four short years it has become one of the Nationwide Tour’s most interesting and successful events. In addition to its unique All-American/amateur component, it has become a leading charity fundraiser. Last year, the event raised $881,270 (second most on Tour) with $325,000 of the proceeds benefiting the Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus. Much of this success is directly attributable to the resources and manpower Tour umbrella sponsor Nationwide Insurance provides its hometown event.

TOUR WIVES LOOKING TO “FILL THE CART WITH FUN” FOR HOSPITAL PATIENTS: The Nationwide Tour Wives Association is partnering with tournament officials this week in a “Fill the Cart with Fun” project that will benefit patients at the Nationwide’s Children’s Hospital. Chaired by Amy Gutschewski, wife of Scott, they are encouraging spectators and volunteers to bring children’s items such as DVDs, video games and board games to the tournament and drop them off at the main gate. The items will be delivered and distributed to the Hospital at the conclusion of the golf tournament. Cash donations will also be accepted.

ABOUT THE NATIONWIDE TOUR: Founded (1990), owned and operated by the PGA TOUR, the Nationwide Tour identifies those players who are ready to compete and win on golf’s biggest stage. As the official proving ground of the PGA TOUR, two out of three PGA TOUR members are Nationwide Tour alumni. Tour alumni have won 277 PGA TOUR titles, including 13 majors and four PLAYERS Championships. Twenty-five PGA TOUR cards will be at stake over the course of 29 events in 2010. Recognizing the Tour’s growing stature, Nationwide Insurance has renewed its umbrella sponsorship of the Nationwide Tour through 2012. The PGA TOUR, through the efforts of its three tours and their tournaments, sponsors, players and volunteers, supports over 2,000 local charities and has surpassed $1.5 billion in charitable giving.

Tickets begin at $10 for single-day access and $30 for week-long admission. They can be purchased through www.nchigolf.com, and 100 percent of all ticket sales are donated to local charities.
