COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State men’s volleyball (11-10 overall, 9-1 Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association) head coach Pete Hanson has been named the 2009 MIVA Coach of the Year by a vote of the conference coaches. He has won the honor the last three seasons and nine times in his 25 years with the Buckeyes.

Ohio State had six players named to the 2009 MIVA all-conference team with three first team selections and three second team selections. Named to the first team were setter Steven Kehoe (So., North Bend, Ohio), outside hitter Robbie Klein (Sr., Cincinnati, Ohio) and opposite Ted Schoenfeldt (Jr., Northbrook, Ill.). Buckeye second team selections include middle blocker John Albertson (Sr., Ballwin, Mo.), libero Mik Berzins (Fr., Brinklow, Md.) and outside hitter John Klanac (So., Orchard Park, N.Y.).

Kehoe was the conference leader in assists per game at 12.75. He was ninth in digs per game at 1.97 and tied for 15th in aces per game at .22. Kehoe tied for 10th in blocks per game at .94. Klein repeats as a first-team selection from 2008 and was a second-team selection in 2007. In conference statistics, he ranked sixth in points (3.97) and kills (3.47) per game. Klein was 19th in aces per game at .19. Schoenfeldt ranked third in points (3.48) and kills (3.78) per game. He was 14th in blocking at .91 per game and ranked eighth in attack percentage at .345. Schoenfeldt ranked 20th in aces (.19) and digs (1.44) per game.

Albertson previously was a second team selection in 2007 and a 2006 first team selection and the MIVA Freshman of the Year. He was the conference leader in blocks per game at 1.62. Albertson ranked 12th in points at 3.55 and 15th in kills per game at 2.48. He ranked sixth in attack percentage at .385. Berzins finished second in the conference in digs per game with a 2.85 average. He had a .989 serve reception percentage in conference play. Klanac finished ninth in points per game at 3.76 and was 11th in kills per game at 2.91. He tied for eighth in aces per game at .33 and was 19th in digs per game at 1.52. Klanac ranked 10th in attack percentage and was 17th in blocks per game at .82.

The MIVA tournament opens this weekend with quarterfinal matches. Friday has fourth seeded Loyola-Chicago (16-9, 5-5 MIVA) hosting fifth seeded IPFW (12-14, 3-7) at 7 p.m. Third seeded Ball State (16-9, 6-4) hosts sixth seeded Quincy (17-32, 0-10) at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. The semifinals and championship match will be hosted by Ohio State in St. John Arena. In the April 30 semifinals, second seeded Lewis (21-7, 7-3) will play the Ball State-Quincy winner at 5 p.m. and top seeded Ohio State (14-10, 9-1) will face the Loyola-Chicago-IPFW winner at 7:30 p.m. The semifinal winners play at 7 p.m., Saturday May 2 for the tournament championship and the MIVA automatic bid to the NCAA Championship, May 7 and 9 in Provo, Utah, hosted by Brigham Young.
