COLUMBUS, Ohio The 15th-ranked Ohio State (5-6 overall, 2-0 Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association) men’s volleyball team opened a four-match homestand with a 3-0 (30-22, 30-20, 30-18) win over Quincy (7-12, 0-1) Thursday evening in St. John Arena. Buckeye John Klanac posted a match-high 17 points for Ohio State with 11 kills, a career-high four ace serves and four assist blocks. Hawk Greg Gant had a team-high 8.5 points for Quincy with seven kills, a solo block and one assist block.

Game one saw Ohio State break a 6-6 tie with a Robbie Klein kill and a Hawk error to give the Buckeyes an 8-6 lead. A Gant kill cut the margin to one at 8-7. Shawn Sangrey, with a kill and a Quincy error made it 10-7, Buckeyes. At 14-11, a Klein kill, two Klanac ace serves and a Hawk error opened an 18-11 Ohio State lead. Leading, 28-21, a Sangrey kill set game point at 29-21. A Buckeye error stopped the game point at 29-22. Ohio State won the game, 30-22, off a Hawk error to take a 1-0 lead in the match. The Buckeyes hit .219 for the game to .057 for Quincy.

Tied at two in game two, a Hawk error and a Steven Kehoe ace serve opened a 4-2 Buckeye lead. Leading 6-4, a Klein solo block and a Hawk error gave Ohio State an 8-4 lead. OSU held the lead at 28-20, reaching game point with a John Albertson kill at 29-20. Ohio State won the game, 30-20, with a triple block by Kehoe, Albertson and Klanac. The Buckeyes hit .172 for the game to -.091 for Quincy.

Game three saw a Klanac kill break a 1-1 tie to give Ohio State the lead. Quincy kept the game close with seven more ties, the last at 16-all. Two Ben Spurlock kills gave Ohio State an 18-16 lead. A Robbie Coughlin kill cut the margin to one at 18-17. Kills from Spurlock and Klanac and a Quincy error opened a 21-17 lead. A Shawn Brannick kill made it 21-18, OSU. The Buckeyes scored the next nine points to close out the game, 30-18, winning the match, 3-0. The run began with two Klanac kills and a Hawk error to make it 24-18. A Spurlock ace serve, a Kehoe-Kevin Heine block and two Quincy errors moved the score to 28-18. The Buckeyes reached match point at 29-18 with a Kehoe-Heine-Klanac block. A Hawk error ended the game at 30-18. The Buckeyes hit .370 in the game to .000 for the Hawks.

Ohio State hit .250 for the match to -.009 for Quincy. The Buckeyes had a 37-31 advantage in kills and in assists. OSU’s Kehoe had 35 assists while Ivan Shirokov posted 25 for Quincy. Ohio State had a 10-2 margin in ace serves with Buckeye Klanac serving up a career-high four. OSU gave up 11 service errors to 10 for the Hawks. Defensively, the Buckeyes had a 34-29 edge in digs. Quincy’s Collin Cooper posted a match-high 10 digs for the Hawks. At the net, Ohio State had a 15.5 to six margin in team blocks. Buckeyes’ Kehoe and Heine shared match high honors with seven blocks. Each posted a solo block and six assists.

Ohio State and Quincy continues the two-match series at 7 p.m. Friday in St. John Arena.
