COLUMBUS, Ohio The 11th-ranked Ohio State (14-9 overall) men’s volleyball team, with five players recording double-figure kills, defeated St. Francis (Pa.) (14-13), 3-1 (30-16, 23-30, 30-28, 32-30) Friday night in St. John Arena. OSU’s Ted Schoenfeldt had a team-high 19.5 points with 18 kills, an ace serve and one assist block. Robbie Klein added 19 points with 15 kills, three ace serves and two assist blocks. Jordan Varee posted a match-high 31.5 points for St. Francis with a match-high 27 kills, adding three ace serves and three assist blocks. Nick Rivett added 13 points with 11 kills, one ace serve and a solo block.
Tied at two in game one, a Red Flash error and a Klein kill gave Ohio State a 4-2 lead. At 7-4, OSU, A Steven Kehoe-Kevin Heine block, a Schoenfeldt kill and a Kehoe ace serve gave the Buckeyes a six-point lead at 10-4. Two Varee kills and an OSU error made it 10-7. An error by St. Francis, a Klein ace serve and kills from Schoenfeldt and Heine gave OSU a 14-7 lead. Patrick McManamon stopped the run with a kill at 14-8. A five-point scoring run for Ohio State started with a Heine kill and an Albertson solo block. A Red Flash error and kills from Schoenfeldt and Albertson made it 19-8. OSU reached game point at 29-16 with a John Klanac kill. An error by the Red Flash ended the game at 30-16 to give Ohio State a 1-0 lead in the match. The Buckeyes hit .464 to .138 for St. Francis.
Game two featured seven lead changes and had the score tied 10 times. Ohio State held an 11-10 lead before a Varee kill tied the game for the last time. A Varee ace serve and a kill from Pete Freyer gave St. Francis a 13-11 lead. A kill from Klein cut the Red Flash lead to one at 13-12. Two kills from Varee and a Rivett ace serve opened a 16-12 St. Francis lead. The Red Flash held the lead and at 28-21 and with a Varee-McManamon block reached game point at 29-21. A St. Francis error and a kill from Heine stopped two game points to cut the lead to 29-23. The Red Flash, with a McManamon solo block, won the game, 30-23, to tie the match at one game each. St. Francis hit .581 for the game to .212 for Ohio State.
A Schoenfeldt kill broke a 3-3 tie in game three to give Ohio State a 4-3 lead. A Kehoe-Albertson-Klanac block and a Schoenfeldt ace serve opened a 6-3 Buckeye lead. A Buckeye error and an Alex Fortney ace serve cut the lead to one at 6-5. At 7-6, two errors by St. Francis gave OSU a 9-6 lead. At 11-8, a Varee kill cut the Buckeye lead to two at 11-9. A kill from Schoenfeldt, two from Heine, two ace serves from Klein and another Schoenfeldt kill gave Ohio State a 17-9 lead. With Ohio State leading, 27-21, a Fortney kill and a McManamon-Varee block made it 27-23. A Klein kill made it 28-23. A kill from Varee and two OSU errors cut the lead to two at 28-26. After an Ohio State time out, a Varee made it 28-27. A Red Flash error set game point at 29-27. A Buckeye error made it 29-28. Ohio State won the game, 30-28, with a Klein kill to take a 2-1 lead in the match. Ohio State hit .343 for the game to .333 for St. Francis.
Tied at two in game four, a St. Francis error and a Klanac-Heine block gave Ohio State a 4-2 lead. At 11-9, a Klanac kill gave OSU a three- point lead at 12-9. Kills from Chad Martson and McManamon cut the lead to one at 12-11. At 14-13, a Varee-Freyer block tied the game at 14. At 16-all, a St. Francis error, a Klanac-Schoenfeldt-Heine block, a Klanac-Heine block and a Red Flash error made it 20-16, Ohio State. The Buckeyes expanded the lead to six at 25-19 but kills from Martson and Rivett and an OSU error cut the margin to three at 25-22. Kills from Schoenfeldt and Klein made it 27-22. Two OSU errors, a Varee kill and his ace serve cut the Buckeye lead to one at 27-26. Kills from Klein and Rivett made it 28-27. Ohio State reached match point at 29-27 with a kill from Klein. A Shane Conley kill stopped the match point at 29-28. A Buckeye error tied the game at 29. A St. Francis error made it 30-29 with OSU serving a third match point. A Varee kill stopped the match point and tied the game at 30. OSU, with a Schoenfeldt kill, made it 31-30, serving a fourth match point. The Buckeyes, with an Albertson kill, won the game, 32-30, to win the match, 3-1. Ohio State hit .342 for the game to 261 for the Red Flash.
Ohio State hit .336 for the match to .324 for St. Francis. The Buckeyes had a 68-62 advantage in kills and a 63-57 margin in assists. OSU’s Kehoe recorded 62 assists with Conley posting 50 for the Red Flash. Ohio State edged St. Francis in ace serves, 6-5. OSU’s Klein and Varee for the Red Flash recorded three each. St. Francis gave up 21 service errors to 12 for the Buckeyes. OSU had a 48-36 advantage in digs with Schoenfeldt posting a match-high 12. At the net, Ohio State had a 10-8 margin in team blocks. Heine recorded a match-high six assist blocks for Ohio State.
The Buckeyes close out the regular season Saturday at 7 p.m. by hosting seventh-ranked Penn State (24-3) in St. John Arena.
