COLUMBUS, Ohio The 10th-ranked (tie) Ohio State (0-3) men’s volleyball team lost a close 3-1 (30-18, 30-28, 25-30, 31-29) decision to No. 7 Southern California (2-1), losing two of three games by two points. The match completes OSU’s play in the 15th Outriggers Hotels Invitational in Honolulu, HI. Buckeye Robbie Klein posted a team-high 21.5 points for Ohio State with 18 kills, an ace serve, a solo block and three assist blocks. Ted Schoenfeldt added 14.5 points for OSU with 12 kills, an ace serve and three assist blocks. Trojan Murphy Troy recorded a match-high 29.5 points with 26 kills, three ace serves and an assist block. Sean Dennis and Tony Ciarelli added 18.5 points each in the contest. Dennis had 18 kills and an assist block while Ciarelli contributed 12 kills, five ace serves, a solo block and an assist block.

Southern California broke an eight-all tie in game one with a Ciarelli kill and an OSU error to take a 10-8 lead. A John Albertson kill cut the Trojan lead to 10-9. Southern California expanded the lead to 25-18 before scoring the final five points of the game, to win the game, 30-18, with a Troy ace serve. The Trojans hit .419 for the game to -.107 for Ohio State.

Game two had 11 ties and five lead changes. Tied at nine, Schoenfeldt gave OSU a 10-9 lead with a kill. A Steven Kehoe ace serve made it 11-9. The Buckeyes expanded the lead to four at 14-10 with a Kevin Heine kill. At 18-16, OSU, kills from Ciarelli and Troy tied the game at 18. A Trojan block by Riley McKibbin, Murphy and Hunter Current gave Southern California a 19-18 lead. Tied at 25, kills from Klein and Albertson opened a 27-25 Buckeye lead. Dennis cut the lead to 27-26 with a kill. Errors by both teams made it 28-27. A Ciarelli ace serve tied the game at 28. A Troy kill set game point at 29-28. Ciarelli, with an ace serve, ended the game at 30-28 to give Southern California a 2-0 lead in the match. The Trojans hit .323 for the game to .265 for Ohio State.

Ohio State opened game three with a Heine kill and a USC error for a 2-0 lead. The Buckeyes held the lead, holding off four ties to lead 25-24 on a Shawn Sangrey kill. Ciarelli, with a kill, tied the game for a fifth time at 25-all. Ohio State closed out the game with a five-point run starting with a Schoenfeldt kill and a USC error to lead 27-25. Kills from Heine and Klein gave the Buckeyes game point at 29-25. A Trojan error ended the game at 30-25, to cut Southern California’s lead to 2-1. The Buckeyes hit .531 for the game to .216 for the Trojans.

Tied at seven in game four, Trojan kills from Austin Zahn and Troy and an OSU error gave Southern California 10-7 lead. Trailing 15-13, a kill and an ace serve from Klein tied the game at 15. At 16-all, a Buckeye block from Heine and Sangrey and a Schoenfeldt kill gave Ohio State an 18-16 lead. At 20-18, OSU, a Dennis kill and a Ciarelli block tied the game at 20. Tied at 21, two Troy kills gave Southern California a 23-21 lead. A Klein kill and two USC errors gave Ohio State a 24-23 lead. A kill from Troy tied the game at 24. OSU took a 25-24 lead with a Kehoe-Albertson-Klein block. Troy tied the game at 25 with a kill. Two OSU errors made it 27-25, USC. Kills from Kehoe and Zahn made it 28-26. A Troy ace serve set match point for USC at 29-26. A Trojan error stopped the first match point at 29-27. A Heine-Sangrey block stopped the second match point at 29-28. A Heine-Schoenfeldt block stopped the third match point, tying the game at 29. A Ciarelli kill made it 30-29, USC. On their fourth match point, a Ciarelli kill ended the game at 31-29 to five Southern California a 3-1 victory in the match. The Trojans hit .250 for the game to .161 for Ohio State.

Southern California hit .293 for the match to .224 for Ohio State. The Trojans had a 70-53 margin in kills and a 9-4 margin in ace serves. Ciarelli had a match-high five ace serves for the Trojans. USC gave up 20 service errors to 11 for the Buckeyes. Southern California had a 65-50 edge in assists. McKibbin recorded a match-high 59 assists with OSU’s Kehoe collecting 45. Defensively, the Trojans had a 39-36 margin in digs. Ciarelli posted a match-high 10 digs in the contest. At the net, Ohio State had a 14.5 to 7.5 advantage in team blocks. OSU’s Albertson recorded a match-high seven total blocks with a solo and six assists

Ohio State returns home next Friday at 7 p.m. to host Stanford and plays Juniata at 2 p.m. Sunday. Both matches are in St. John Arena and admission is free.
