COLUMBUS, Ohio The 10th-ranked (tie) Ohio State (0-2) men’s volleyball team dropped a 3-0 (30-27, 30-24, 30-19) decision to No. 1 Penn State (2-0) in the second round of the 15th Outrigger Hotels Invitational Friday in Honolulu, HI. Ohio State’s Ted Schoenfeldt collected a team-high 14 points for the Buckeyes with 13 kills and an ace serve. Robbie Klein added 11.5 points with 11 kills and an assist block. Penn State’s Will Price posted a match-high 15.5 points with 12 kills, two ace serves, a solo block and an assist block. Max Lipsitz added 14 points with 12 kills, a solo block and two assist blocks.

Penn State opened game one with two Ryan Sweitzer kills. With Ohio State trailing, 15-13, a Penn State error and a Steven Kehoe ace serve tied the game at 15. The Buckeyes took a 16-15 lead with a Schoenfeldt kill. A second ace serve by Kehoe and a Nittany Lion error opened up an 18-15 lead. At 20-18, a Max Lipsitz kill and an Edgardo Goas ace serve tied the game at 20. After three more ties, a Sweitzer kill and a Max Holt-Jay Stauffer block put the Nittany Lions ahead, 25-23. Two Klein kills and an OSU error made it 26-25, Penn State. A Goas kill and a Will Price block made it 28-25. A kill from Ben Spurlock cut the lead to two at 28-26. Penn State reached game point at 29-26 with a Price kill. Schoenfeldt, with a kill, stopped the game point at 29-27. The Nittany Lions, with a Sweitzer kill, won the game, 30-27, to take a 1-0 lead in the match. Penn State hit .429 for the game to .184 for Ohio State.

Game two saw Penn State open up a 4-1 lead. Trailing, 8-6, a Schoenfeldt kill and a Kehoe-John Albertson-Jason Tobkin block tied the game at eight. A PSU error gave Ohio State a 9-8 lead. A Holt kill tied the game at nine. Ohio State took a 10-9 lead with a Tobkin kill. A Price kill tied the game and with an OSU error and a Price kill, Penn State had a 12-10 lead. The Nittany Lions held the lead reaching game point with a Goas block at 29-24. Lipsitz, with a kill, ended the game at 30-24 for a 2-0 Penn State lead. The Nittany Lions hit .312 for the game to .212 for the Buckeyes.

Ohio State opened game three with a Schoenfeldt kill and a block by Albertson and Klein for a 2-0 lead. Penn State tied the game at two off an OSU error and a Holt ace serve. Kills from Klein and Lipsitz tied the game at three. A Buckeye error and a Kehoe kill made it four-all. A Lipsitz kill and a Lipsitz-Joe Sunder block gave the Nittany Lions a 6-4 lead. Penn State held the lead and reached match point on a Buckeye error at 29-18. A Schoenfeldt kill stopped the match point at 29-19. Penn State closed out the game at 30-19 with a Holt kill to win the match, 3-0. The Nittany Lions hit .565 in the game to .280 for the Buckeyes.

Penn State hit .422 for the match to .219 for Ohio State. The Nittany Lions had a 50-38 advantage in kills and an 8-4 margin in ace serves. PSU’s Holt had a match-high three ace serves. The Nittany Lions gave up 16 service errors to 14 for the Buckeyes. PSU collected 47 assists to 36 for Ohio State. Goas had a match-high 45 assists while OSU’s Kehoe had 33. Defensively, the Nittany Lions had a 35-25 advantage in digs with Nittany Lion Dennis Del Valle recording a match-high 10. At the net, Penn State enjoyed an eight to 2.5 margin in team blocks. Lipsitz (one solo, two assists) and Holt (three assists) shared match-high honors with three blocks each.

Ohio State completes play in the 15th Outrigger Hotels Invitational at 9 p.m. ET Saturday when they face seventh-ranked Southern California.
