COLUMBUS, Ohio The Ohio State (10-9 overall, 6-1 Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association) men’s volleyball team overcame a 2-0 Ball State (13-8, 4-4) lead for a come-from-behind 3-2 (27-30, 21-30, 30-26, 30-27, 15-10) victory over the 14th-ranked Cardinals Friday night in Worthen Arena. Buckeye Ted Schoenfeldt posted a match-high 23 points in the victory with 21 kills, a solo block and two assist blocks. Robbie Klein added 21.5 points with 19 kills, a solo block and three assist blocks. Ball State’s Todd Chamberlain recorded a team-high 20 points with 17 kills, an ace serve and four assist blocks. Andy Nelson added 18 points for the Cardinals with 13 kills, an ace serve, a solo block and six assist blocks.
Game one, with 14 ties and six lead changes, remained close until the end. Ball State held a 25-23 lead before a Ben Spurlock kill and two Ball State errors gave Ohio State a 26-25 lead. Ball State tied the game at 26 with a Nelson kill. A John Klanac kill made it 27-26, OSU. Nelson, with a kill, tied the game at 27. A Nelson-Chamberlain block gave the Cardinals a 28-27 lead. Ball State reached game point at 29-27 with an Ethan Pheister-Nelson block. The Cardinals won the game, 30-27, with an OSU error to lead the match, 1-0. Ball State hit .237 for the game to .154 for the Buckeyes.
In game two, Ball State overcame a 7-6 Buckeye lead with a four-point run starting with a Chamberlain kill to tie the game at seven. A J.D. Gasparovic kill gave the Cardinals an 8-7 lead. A Gasparovice-Matt Sprague-Dominic Spadavecchio block and a Chamberlain ace serve extended the lead to 10-7. The Cardinals held the lead and reached game point at 29-21 with a Gasparovic-Chamberlain block. A Chamberlain kill ended the game, 30-21, to give the Cardinals a 2-0 lead in the match. Ball State hit .448 for the game to .267 for the Buckeyes.
Two Buckeye errors opened game three to give Ball State a 2-0 lead. OSU tied the game with kills from Klein and Schoenfeldt. At 3-3, a Cardinal error and a John Albertson ace serve gave Ohio State a 5-3 lead. A Chamberlain kill and a Buckeye error tied the game at five. Tied at nine, a Spadavecchio-Nelson block gave Ball State a 10-9 lead. OSU tied the game at 10 with a Klein kill. The Buckeyes, with kills from Klanac and Albertson, took a 12-10 lead. Ohio State reached game point at 29-25 with a Klein kill. A Nelson kill stopped the game point at 29-26. Ohio State won the game, 30-26, with a Schoenfeldt kill to cut the Cardinal lead to 2-1. The Buckeyes hit .205 for the game to .100 for Ball State.
Ball State opened game four with a 6-0 lead. The run began with two Chamberlain kills and an OSU error. A kill from Spadavecchio and two ace serves from Pheister completed the run. Ohio State trailed 22-16 before kills from Schoenfeldt, Klanac and Spurlock cut the lead to three at 22-19. At 26-23, two kills from Albertson and an Albertson-Steven Kehoe block tied the game at 26. Ohio State took a 27-26 lead with a Kehoe-Albertson-Klanac block. Back-to-back kills from Klanac set game point at 29-26. A Buckeye error stopped the game point at 29-27. Ohio State won the game, 30-27, with a Klanac kill to tie the match at 2-2. For the game, Ohio State hit .410 to .300 for Ball State.
Game five opened with a 1-0 Ball State lead after a Nelson kill. OSU tied the game at one with a kill from Schoenfeldt. A Ball State error and a Nelson kill tied the game at two. OSU took a 4-2 lead with a Spurlock kill and an Albertson-Schoenfeldt block. A Chamberlain kill and a Nelson ace serve tied the game at four. A Klein kill and a Cardinal error gave the Buckeyes a 6-4 lead. An OSU error and a Pheister ace serve tied the game at six. Kills from Klein and Gasparovic moved the game to 7-7. Ohio State took an 8-7 lead with a Klanac kill. Two Ball State errors gave OSU a 10-7 lead as Ball State called time out. An OSU error and a Klanac kill made it 11-8. A block from Spurlock and Schoenfeldt gave OSU a four-point lead at 12-8 as the Cardinals called time out. Kills from Spadavecchio and Schoenfeldt made it 13-9. A Ball State error made it 14-9 with Ohio State serving match point. A Buckeye error stopped the match point at 14-10. Ohio State won the game, 15-10, with a Cardinal error to win the match, 3-2. Ohio State hit .500 for the game to -.136 for Ball State.
Ohio State hit .277 for the game to .214 for Ball State. The Buckeyes had a 74-68 advantage in kills and a 68-61 edge in assists. OSU’s Kehoe and BSU’s Pheister each recorded 56 assists in the match. The Cardinals had an eight-to-one advantage in ace serves. Pheister posted a match-high four aces for Ball State. OSU gave up 16 service errors to 13 for the Cardinals. Defensively, Ohio State had a 49-45 advantage in digs. Billy Ebel posted a match-high 17 digs for Ball State while OSU’s Klein recorded 11 and Kehoe, 10. Both recorded double-doubles (Klein, 19 kills, 11 digs: Kehoe, 56 assists, 10 digs) in the match. At the net, OSU had a 16.5 to 13 margin in team blocks. OSU’s Albertson posted a match-high nine total blocks with one solo and eight assists.
Ohio State continues conference play next week when the Buckeyes play at Loyola-Chicago (11-8, 1-4) Friday and at Lewis (18-5, 5-1) Saturday.
