Columbus, Ohio – Ohio State track and field assistant coach Ashley Muffet has been named to the USA Track and Field women’s staff for the 2017 Pan American Junior Championships. Muffet, who oversees the throws portion of the Ohio State program, will be instructing some of the finest young athletes in America. The Pan American Junior Championships will take place July 21-23 in Lima, Peru.
Muffet, who is in her third season serving as the throws coach, has played an instrumental role in boosting the throwing corps at Ohio State. At the 2017 Big Ten Outdoor Championships, she helped Nick Demaline and Sade Olatoye sweep the shot put titles at the conference meet, making them only the third duo from the same school since 1982 to sweep B1G shot put titles. Olatoye launched a tremendous throw of 16.69m (54-9.25) to set the school record, and Demaline’s toss of 19.75m (64-9.75) was the best of his outdoor career and moved him into No. 4 on the all-time list at Ohio State.
In three years under Muffet’s tutelage, nine Buckeye throwers have found themselves nestled inside the Top 5 in their respective events. Two-time All-American and current U.S. Olympic Training Center resident J.C. Murasky was one of her greatest projects; Murasky ranks third all-time in program history in three events: the indoor shot put (20.19m), the outdoor shot put (20.21m) and the discus throw (53.59m), and he was a two-time All-American in the shot put.
In addition to their accomplishments outdoor, Olatoye and Demaline both had quality indoor seasons during 2017 as well. Both were named All-Americans, Olatoye in the hammer throw, in which she also holds the school record, and Demaline in the shot put (No. 5 indoors). In addition to her school record in the weight throw, Olatoye also has the third-best indoor shot put in Ohio State history.
Current Buckeyes Alyssa Kopp and Jared Ballenger have also entered the Top 5 throws of their disciplines. Kopp, a graduate transfer from Auburn University, heaved the javelin a personal-best 47.23m (154-11) at the 2017 Big Ten Championships to place fifth and move into No. 2 all-time at Ohio State. Ballenger recorded the fourth-best discus throw by a Buckeye in 2016 at the LSU Battle on the Bayou; the right-handed thrower tossed the discus 53.57m (175-9) to rank fourth best in program history.
Other throwers that have entered the Top 5 under Muffet’s instruction include Alyssa Gary (No. 3 outdoor shot put), Carly Pendleton (No. 5 discus), Allie Missler (No. 3 javelin) and Aaron Zedella (No. 4 hammer throw and No. 5 weight throw).
